I still have the top tier of my wedding cake and I married in 1993!! It still looks good but I daren't break into it. Sadly it was never used & I'm now old enough to be a Grandmother. Don't know why I keep it.

wow, I had no idea they did this - our vicar's been dead donkey's years too.. I wonder what they did in our case ? We were married in 1986. (I was a child bride). You're on a roll today. Did you drink mango juice instead of champagne, given your age ;)

Really? Doubting Thomas! This could start off a whole new thread! I have a Star Wars chocolate bar in my fridge with a best before date of 28/5 /00 which son assures me is a collector's item and will be worth thousands in years to come!!

We had a similar issue four years ago as the registrar who married us was new to the job and her registration had not been formally finalised. I left the UK before my certificate was returned, but just paid the extra to have it shipped out here.

What I can't understand is why they don't go straight to the main records office in the first place. You pay £30 plus postage so surely that would cover any fees charged. To add insult to injury the UAE embassy also charge £30 just to look at it and stamp it!! I live in the Northeast so nipping off to London is a last resort. No wonder people prefer to do visa runs!!

Go to the General Records Office (used to be Somerset House) and request a record of your marriage, even if you married in church the legal registration is there. They will send you a copy from the register for a small fee. ETA Should have said they will send you an extract, this is as good as any original, you may also need to have it apostled as you would a church certificate, I believe you have to get that done in Milton Keynes, perhaps some of the English ladies on here will advise (sorry I'm a Scot and we do it differently).

I sent my marriage certificate to the FCO to be legalised on the 17th March. The problem that has arisen is that we were married in 1977 and the vicar who officiated died over 20 years ago. I had rang the FCO to advise them of this but you only get through to a centralised office who can only answer general enquiries and can not deal with specific cases. I received an e-mail from the officer dealing with my application last week saying that she had had no reply from the vicar and could I try and contact him to ask him to reply to her e-mail.(?!) I have now spoken to the present vicar who denies any knowledge of the e-mail and has told me to contact the Parish records office! I rang FCO who of course can't help because they can not access my case! They could not even tell me what is usually required from the church as proof of legality. I have now e-mailed the officer and received an automated reply saying they will reply within 5 days! I am coming out to Dubai at the end of the month and am now very worried that my certificate will not be legalised and returned to me before I leave. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there any way round this to gain residency ( my husband is sponsoring me)
