Hi - I've registered for the 10k which is two weeks today. I plan to jog/walk the route - I have been training but mostly on a treadmill though I have done some outdoor training recently too.

Anyone else entered? What time do you estimate you will take to complete? Will you run/jog/walk - or a combination?

Will I be ok doing a combination of the above? - i think I'll finish in about 1 hour 30 at the most. This will be my first ever 10k so will be interesting to see how I do, I just hope I'm not too slow and get in the way.

Thanks

Ladies - thank you for the feedback and tips - I feel a bit better about this now - even though it's still a bit scary and exciting too ! This is my first public fitness challenge of the year after losing a lot of weight and getting fitter over the last 10 months, the second is to do the RAK half marathon in Feb (I entered and the ladies who said they would do it with me didn't - but it's a great fitness challenge - even if I have to go alone !) This time last year I would never have dreamt that I would be doing this challenge. DesertRose - I've just checked and I've only received a confirmation email when I booked. Looks like we pick up our packs the week after next and that's about it. Lakshmi - thanks for the tip about water, I plan on using a water belt as I'm always dehydrated. Have a great 10k - I'll be the one with the purple face who WILL cross that finish line - it's just a matter of how long it takes !

I'm doing it with my PT and a friend. I hope to run more than I walk even if I run 5.1kms and walk the other 4.9. I'll be doing run/walk/run/walk........for a certain amount of minutes each time. Its the best I can do at 53 and new to this keeping fit and healthy malarky. I'm really concerned though that despite registering months ago I've had no information from the organisers apart from the initail email telling me I'd registered.

Congratulations on registering! it is a great event and hopefully the first of many for you. there are plenty of people who will do that time so you won't be alone. It's perfectly acceptable to run-walk it, but try to push yourself a much as possible before you do your first walk - for eg, say to yourself that you won't walk until you have done 3km running, when you reach the 3k, pick someone ahead of you and say that you will only allow yourself to walk once you reach them. if you still have energy when you reach them, then pick someone else and do the same. Once you walk the first time, your mind will always try to convince you to walk again ! If it's your first race, remember race etiquette. Start the race behind faster runners (ie don't line up in front of everyone). Run on the right side of the road. If you are going to walk, make sure you don't have anyone right on your heels. when going for a water station, move towards the station far in advance (don't veer off suddenly). if you need to stop completely to do your laces or to drink, make sure you don't have anyone behind you. Don't play your music too loud so that you can hear people coming pass behind you. When you get to the finish line, smile and keep moving ! .... and take only one medal !!!! But most of all, enjoy the challenge, take in the experience, look at the fast runners going on the other side of the road and imagine yourself with them !!!! Have fun !

I'm doing it and really looking forward to it. I'm pretty slow but as long as I'm finished in time to watch the winner of the marathon come through I'll be happy. Re water, you can always carry your own. I hate having a dry mouth when I'm running so I always run with a water bottle. Just hope it's not raining! Good luck to everybody doing marathon, 10k, or 3k :)

I wouldn't worry about being too slow, just stick to one side and hold your own, taking over when necessary. I did it last year and really enjoyed it. Though I will say you should do as much outdoor training as possible, if you're not a natural runner then being outside is much harder than the treadmill, trust me as I'm not natural that's for sure! I can't remember my time but will try and look at the old website to find. I recall doing 5 x 1min walks, the rest was slow jogging. The only thing I'd recommend is to do some training without water, they may have changed it since last year but there wasn't a water station for quite some time, yet on the last few kms there seemed to be a few. In any case it should be marked on the route map. Finally, well done! I'm sure you'll feel a huge accomplishment to finish no matter what your time :)
