Hi, I need to replace my sons epi pens, previously I have bought them privately in the UK but don't have that option at the moment. Has anyone got one recently and were you able to just buy it or did it have to be prescribed by a doctor at the hospital? (I think that's the case, or was at the American)

No they do not require a prescription from a doc that works at City Hospital neither does Emirates hospital. HTH!

Do they require a prescription from a doctor that works at City Hospital or will they accept from other doctors? We are not under a specialist and our GP will happily write the prescription. At American you MUST see one of their consultants or they won't fill the prescription. Oh how I wish pharmacies were allowed to stock them.

My DS sees the allergist at American Hospital, and I all I have to do to get a replacement Epi Pen is call the doctor's office to request the prescription. I then pick this up at the reception and get it filled in the AH pharmacy. All I have to pay for is the pen. I have found that the expiration dates vary widely, so check them before you purchase. Last time I bought two, one expired 11 months from the date of purchase but the other one was only good for eight months.

Thanks, I think that's where I'd got them before and they used to call me to see if I needed replacements so I'll give them a call.

I use adult EpiPens. I haven't got one here for a while, but American Hospital does stock them, but they make you pay to see one of their doctors as they only accept American Hospital prescriptions. It's a complete joke, even the Doctor was laughing, as there was no way he could 'test' my allergy. I just had to hand over 400aed for the appointment and then 350aed for the pen, and he wrote the prescription. When I got the pen, it was only valid for 3 months, where as the UK is usually 12 months. I was livid. My health insurance also doesn't like American Hospital, so only got 60% back. The Life Pharamcy were looking at stocking them a while back, it might be worth giving them a call. Also check with GMC (General Medical Centre) near Magrudys on Beach Road, they were also looking at getting some in. They dispose of my out of date ones for me. If you do find them, please can you post an update... as it would be great to know. I have two in the country at the moment, but they expire in March. edited by nels on 04/01/2011
