Hi ladies,
could someone pls point me in the right direction. Long story short: we don't have Orbit/showtime at home but instead we have BIS TV (French). In the past 10 months we've had to send our card back as they changed the frequency and lost 2 months on it and now they've changed the whole system to HD so we need to buy a new decoder (at 1500 dhs) if we want to have the channels back! Having bought the current decoder + satellite less than a yr ago I'm not very happy right now. Is there another more reliable way to get French channels and also good old British BBCs, ITV and C4?
School holidays starting in 2 weeks and the thought of no TV at all for the kids fills me with dread:\:

Thanks

The guy's name is Mustafa. My mail is dhdg at eim dot ae if you want me to send you his number. I have the exact same decoder as uae mom (by the way this is a Kaon not Keon ;) ) but I bought it a long time ago...and Mustafa managed to have it worked. Moustique you are right, there should be some changes again : the PCMCIA card (=the adaptor device in which you enter your BIS TV card) will have to be changed (apparently for the moment we all have here in Dubai a "mpeg2 format" adaptor device and the reason why we manage to receive the BIS channels is because they are currently "en clair"). So the next step is to get the mpeg4 adaptor which is not available at the moment (but we will need it as soon as BIS va crypter ses chaines)

you have to buy a receiver hd and a "module" viacess néotion only available in France at the moment, and you need a dish minimum 120 cm. I ordered my "décodeur" on Galli website, received it last tuesday, but the signal is very bad, some channels are working but not TF1, FRANCE 2, FRANCE3 etc... I called UMMAIR to check if the size of the dish is correct. Bon courage, ce n'est pas facile, et je crois que BIS TV patauge un peu en ce moment pour améliorer la puissance de diffusion !!wait and see

I got the decoder from Carrefour (595dhs) Keon. It's HD and mpeg 4 and I get all the bis tv channels. There was a problem until today but now it's ok. The bis tv card you can get easily from tv corner website. They'll send it in a few days.

thanks for Shaks. Email sent so you can delete your address. From what i understand switching to an HD decoder will restore the channels but it seems that there will be some new changes again in Novembre (according to the satelite guy i know here, Mohammed, and that will once again affect everything. That's why i'm not keen to invest too much money at this stage. edited by Moustique on 13/04/2011

there are threads on franco dubai going on about this topic. send me ur e mail on and I will forward them. I used to get the french channels through some illegal way decoder connected to our router. I lost all the french channels now bur cannot be bothered to do anything about it for now as we are moving next month. It seems that if I change the decoder to a DH one I will get them back . edited by shaks on 13/04/2011

If we get this decoder, would you get channels like TF1, M6 etc? With a decoder and a Carte Bis you get most of the french channels: TF1, France 1,2,3,4,5 etc, Gulli, M6 et qques autres chaines plutot nulles :-). It all depends which package you buy.

When you talk about getting BBC and ITV channels, do you mean via satellite dish or watching on the computer? I dont know but it seems like a people can get good old British TV and I have no idea how to do it. When i try via the PC it is very often censored - ditto for French channels. Someone mentioned VPN but I have NO idea what that is and my husband insists that we would need to do it from London otherwise it wont work and I also only have a teeny netbook type laptop at home.

Have been trying in vain to get these answers - have googled vpn's but there are lots out there and it's a minefield..would be wonderful if someone using a good one could share! Hate to go for one and find out it is unreliable. Someone did say they would send details the other day but it hasn't happened. It's frustrating when someone says they will and you wait and wait..... when you are new to a place it is so nice if those in the know can share.

Thanks Holly, that would be great! As for the vpn suggestion, I have to confess I haven't the foggiest what it's about ... I had a look online but it makes no sense to me. Is it a software I download onto my computer, and of so, is it legal here? Can someone enlighten me, pls?

I might have the solution. BIS TV have changed the format they send the signal in and we have just had one of our TV's fixed by DH"s company TV guy. We did have to buy a new decoder, but it was only 350 - 400 dhs I'm sure. It was a little more complicated than just buying the new decoder - he had to install a bit of software. He's coming again next week to fix the second tv - will ask him if it's OK to pass on his details. (He's a full time employee of the company). To be clear, we have a legitimate BIS subscription. Also they did say in November this year they are changing the system again which may mean we need to do it all again .......

I have the same problem, used to watch French TV through some illegal way ( cable connected to router and decoder) Now it stopped ( 2 days back) and I am trying to find another solution. I will get DH to contact the technician who installed the system and see if there is a way...
