In a nutshell, I have a friend who's affairs in Dubai are in a complete mess. She, husband and family are out of the country but she wants to come back to try to retrieve a few, small personal possessions. There are very heavy, ever-increasing debts being accrued in her husbands name. Her residence visa has now expired (by default - she has been out over 6 months) so she will re-enter as a tourist. My major concern with her coming back is that she has a supplementary credit card (in her name) on her husband's account and I have visions of her being held at the airport on trying to enter. I have tried desperately to get her to change her mind about coming but what i am saying is just not getting through. I know that she is the one making the decision and will have to deal with the consequences.
The question? Anyone experienced/lived through this?

It's a possibility that you won't be able to register their car then, as I suspect their passports have probably been flagged in the RTA system too. I think the bank/gov't would probably want to confiscate anything they can get to recuperate some of their losses. I hope you won't get into trouble for trying.

maybe tell her best to sell her stuff away , those that are in good condition. give away to charity. since you are alreadyhelping her, i suppose you can sell the things for her . she can't have both at time like this. if this is me, i will forget about the stuff as they are replaceable. .... edited by tipahtertipu on 25/01/2011

SJC if they say they cannot afford to ship or post anything over, what were they going to pay for their ticket over here with? Or did they plan on a one way ticket? Because really that is all they will need. This is really unfair on you I think.

I have just sent her a long e-mail (I'm not good at talking in these situations) repeating that she needs to forget about coming. I've taken so much out of the villa for her already and have offered to go back in again once more and retrieve a couple more things. We could hand carry the stuff over in dribs and drabs on personal/business trips. She cannot afford to ship anything. This whole situation is making me sick with worry; she can't see the wood for the trees. Hopefully the last very blunt line of my mail will work. If not, well, I have tried my best. SJC you really are being a good friend to her by telling her not to come Why don t you suggest to her that you sell some of the things in the villa that she doesn t want and then at least you can help and send some money over or pay to send some personal things back for her

Your friend is asking for trouble if she comes back to Dubai. Has she completely lost her mind?

She would def be arrested even if her card was only a supplementary card the banks will have filed and she will be on record She could never come back as the others have said

IMO they would be taking a huge risk coming back here, if I was in their situation I would be making sure I never even flew over the airspace here. They would be better to spend the money on their ticket on getting stuff posted home by someone already here.

Clairehdp - same person. 4 children. Blinkers on. I wish I could walk away but I know I will be the one called if things go wrong. If this is the same person who you are trying to sell their car for them and find new employers for their maid - she owes it to you to listen to your advice. If she has a family - what on earth is she thinking about - if they have done a runner then they should never think about coming back into Dubai nor transitting through - as soon as their details are entered into the system they will be flagged....... I would get the personal items for her and fedex them to her if they are so important. What a good friend you are.

I agree - she'd be taking a huge risk. Really not worth it IMO!

More than likely she's in the system and once they run her passport the red flag will go up. The only place she will go from the airport would be to the jail. You can bring those valuables she wants to retrieve to her.
