I checked the inside of his collar - nothing doing :(. If you think they're never going to run in a panic, great. I'm not going to waste time arguing with you on that one. I'm happy for you. He's definitely not an import, unless any pet shops have taken to bringing in portly senior citizens of the Al Heinz 57 breed ;). His face looks like a desert dog and he himself probably looked like one until he got his middle-age spread, but his tail looks like a husky. He's a lovely old thing and seems utterly bewildered, poor old dear. He's on Dubizzle, I've done posters down by Ibn Battuta, I'm going to make a start on the vets tomorrow and talk to Xpress. I know people find dogs every day, but not strolling around shopping malls so I'm hoping that'll be enough of a hook for a story! Oh, and I'm going to call the municipality vet tomorrow too, but I'm not banking on that one as he doesn't have a chip. What's the nearest vet to Ibn Battuta? I'll start with that one. And I guess it might be worth trying to look for his chip again. I know one of ours has moved right under his shoulder and it took the vet a while to find it last time he was there. And yep, this old boy is neutered.

Yep, I'd say the dog's owner is irresponsible. No chip is ridiculous, especially over here, and no tag is bordering on lunacy. But seriously, your dogs wouldn't go missing because they're trained? I'd like to see how trained they were if something frightened the bejesus out of them and they took off. If you're so sure, save yourself the expense of chipping, collar and tags ;). I think I'll go with the rehoming option if his owners aren't found. And like I said earlier, maybe there aren't any posters yet because the owners are away and the maid a) is too petrified to tell anyone she's lost the dog or b) hasn't read SueB's list of what to do when you lose your dog. PS He does have a collar on. A nice black leather one :). Not much help to me in finding his owners, though, Nope DC sorry my dogs don't go anywhere, like i said they are TRAINED. Second point, the law states that all dogs must be tagged and microchipped, it's not about saving money it's about being a responsible owner. What you can deduce is this dog is not an import or been vaccinated recently by a reputable vet. Therefore you should also presume it has not been wormed and should be very wary about mixing it and make sure you are scrupulous re hygine. If the dog is a problem shut in a room away from your other animals until a home is found. The first time it goes to bite you it goes to the nasty man in the white coat with a big and finale injection. Advertise on Dubbizle at the DM and inform all the vets (SueB list) with a description that you have the dog. Maybe try a pic in GN and & days. After that give yourself a time frame.

If it was one of my dogs you would soon find it was microchiped, registered with a vet here, the DM as well as both tattoed in the ear and registered with an international database. That's aside from the fact the dog would be a wearing collar and DM tags and I would have advertised everywhere known to man to find my dog. Moreover my dogs don't go missing, they are trained. So let's get this into some perspective; we can conclude straight away the owner of this dog is an irresponsible one. The dog is untagged, uncollared, not microchipped and there is no advert suggesting lost. The dog gets 7 days and then put down or rehomed. It's practical not emotional.

Super-helpful post, thanks. Remind me of that if I find a pet of yours. I guess the owners could be away and that's why nobody's called to report him missing. I think he speaks English, because he gets 'come here' and 'sit' but he's not terribly obedient! Thanks, aroha. I'm planning to walk our two then come back, drop them off and take Old Boy so we'll see how it goes.

just a funny thought... does grandad dog seem to understand English? if not you need to learn the word for home in as many languages as possible and then when you follow SueB's v good idea you can say "Home" or "Bayt" and keep going till he understands you!!

could you try this? take him back to where you found him, put on a retractable lead and see if he takes you to his home? I dont imagine alot of people who have lost an animal know how to look for one other than walking the streets and maybe putting up a poster in the nearest people place. It is possible he has wandered off and there is only homehelp at the home? sorry, trying to be optomistic here...

No good news, I'm afraid. And there's no way we'll be adopting the old boy, sadly. He hates our cats, they hate him and this is causing mayhem in the night when he barks at them and tried to chase them; he had a go at our younger dog who is now terrified of him; and Casa DC is full to the brim! I went and asked at Al Muntazah villas this morning and left them a poster, and at the Jebel Ali club, and I'll do Garden View villas tomorrow. Not so much as a sniff of anyone claiming him so far :(. I feel so sorry for him - he's clearly missing home.

Thanks so much for the offer, SamD, and sorry for the late reply. I've just logged back in now. DH seems a bit calmer about him today, but still no sign of the owner :(. I'll see what K9 say tomorrow or Sunday then maybe call either RAK or scads.ae. Thanks again for the offer but I don't want to put you out. My car stinks anyway so he may as well travel in that!

You could try the RAK animal shelter too, a friend of mine found a dog and RAK were prepared to take him. SamD, love it :) one of my muts gets car sick. He's better than he used to be and managed to wait until we were about 5 minutes from home the other day! I hate to think what'll happen if we have to ship him anywhere!

scads.ae? Worth a try? I know it is a big hike down there. If they will take him, I can drive him tomorrow lunchtime, but have to belt back for vet appt for own four legged child. Otherwise my Saturday is free to act as chauffeur. We are wise in the ways of dogs who chunder in cars...

A gentle little nudge for anyone who might know who his owners are... ...and does anyone fancy fostering?! He hates our cats and DH is having a tantrum about having him here. He's on K9's waiting list so I'll call them back when they're open and see if they can take him, and Posh Paws are full.

They still shoot strays in other emirates (Fujairah for one). Sharjah up until a few years ago used strychnine to control cats, dogs and vermin. So there is still room for progress

DubaiCat you are awesome for taking this pooch home.....i live in Muscat and am part of a volunteer group to try and find homes for strays........we struggle to find volunteers.........struggle to raise cash (cos we're not registered and no ministry will sign the papers!).........struggle to find homes for dogs and cats.....so it's great to see how you all pitch in when things like this happen.
