We stayed @ westin n loved the place too...very beautiful n romantic n all that...but if u would want to access the beach just make sure there's enough water cos when we were there, the water had receded n the beach was muddy. Then when we went to the underwater zoo in pantai cenang, we found lot of hotels there, including some really good ones n they had access to lovely blue sea where one cud do so many water based fun stuff unlike the westin. so depends on what you want to do...otherwise Westin is highly recommended, especially for the food, ambience and also proximity to Kuah town.

Another vote for the Andaman especially with kids - the pool, beach and sea here were much nicer than at Pelangi (we moved from Pelangi after 4 days having booked in there for 2 weeks - bitterly disappointed) and just love the Andaman. It is isolated but so beautiful and the spa is awesome so definitely plan some 'me' time for yourself - it is up on the mountain and you can hear the waves crashing on the rocks below, the beetles and birds singing in the rain forest behind and a breeze blowing over you whilst you get treated!

Dito the Andaman for children friendly hotel, we stayed at the Datai which is mostly honeymooners but walked along the beach to the Andaman. Very child friendly with plenty of activities and beautiful part of the island. We hired a car for the week as it was dirt cheap and travelled the island extensivley. Go to the crocodile farm, aquarium, cable cars and make sure you eat at the hawkers markets as food is amazing and very cheaap.

Get an online quote from Air Malaysia. You might cut airfares for the family by half.

Just got s a quick quote from Emirates with flights , airport transfers, internal flights , hotel and breakfast for a family of 5 of 49,000 aed . Is that expensive ?() for two nights KL 7 nights LK and 2 nights KL I would say it is depends on which 5 star hotels that they book you into. Obviously you could always go for cheaper option by staying at holiday apartment in Kuah town or family villa such as Chogm villa (about GBP350 per week) ;). 2 bedroom 5 star holiday apartment in KL (city center) for 2 nights would cost about AED2500. Internal flight with Airasia for family of 5 would cost you around AED1200 and economy flight for family for 5 to KL would be.....AED15000? Btw....I am assuming family of 5 meant 2 adults and 3 children aged between 2 to 11. So the flights could be a bit more expensive if the children are older or the other 3 are adults. You could stay at this 5 star hotel. 3 children would cost you about AED1200 extra for 7 nights stay. http://www.booking.com/hotel/my/the-danna.html?sid=8fb7074dbfdad303bed86efc6e6d5b0e;checkin=2011-07-08;checkout=2011-07-15;srfid=6ab63749617eb5c7cc7e42d9f7d38279X3 My calculation for 7 nights in L'kawi and 4 nights in KL at 5 star hotels with Emirates and Air Asia flights come around AED35K. So, my guess you are quoted AED49000 because you are flying business or First class :) anyway, this website has some info that you might find useful (i.e. climate, map, tipping, etc) : http://www.villa-malaysia.com/location.htm <em>edited by blimey on 15/03/2011</em>

Phone the hotels and negotiate - what you see on the net is not what you will get in Malaysia. You can start of with e-mail and then follow up with a call for an even better price ;) I suggest July as August gets more rain and monsoon winds start around September although Langkawi is pretty much the same all year round. We once booked all inclusive at Tanjung Rhu and stayed for 10 days. I still think it was one of our best holidays ever - we just wanted to chill and this hotel is great for chilling :) It is also an eco resort so if you are looking for motorised waterspots you won't find it here. They do however offer non-motorised watersports. The north if the island is also the prettiest. The resort is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) on the island and features 3 pools - one an ozone rich pool with build in bar and even build in "chairs" where you can lie back inn the water and catch a tan/read/relax. It has multiple kids pools all around the bigger pool. Another pool is romantic lagoon style with sand and then another huge one near the spa. The two big pools is right next to the beach so you can also lie on the beach and swim in the pool. All inclusive included as many ice creams/cold drinks/meals you could manage. Breakfast/Lunch/High Tea/Dinner and unlimited snacks from the bar fridge. The kids meals were really yummy and featured about 20 different dishes with interesting and more conservative dishes. The interesting onces for e.g. was chicken pie with chocolate sauce LOL. The resort has a library where parents or kids can enjoy time away from the room and out of the sun, also DVD library and a few different restaurtants. This is the type of place where one can be eother very private or enjoy a group. Rooms are huge - we booked an 80 sq/m room (bayu senja) with two LCD TV's, DVD player, hi-fi et al. The resort has cars available for rental - you really need no more than one or 2 days to explore the island. You can also catch the curtesy bus. http://www.tanjungrhu.com.my/ There is a kids club (free) and an arts and crafts hut. The kids loved the hut as they did batik, made jewelery, learned wood carving etc. Our other favourite is Bon Ton, however this is not the place for a group with kids IMHO, but do pop in for lunch or dinner. PS: I see the latest feedback on Tripadvisor mentions that it needs refurbishment. We went 2008 so my feedback relates to our experience 3 years back. <em>edited by Singapore Sling on 15/03/2011</em>

Personally, I always use travel websites to book my hotels as I find the hotels' reviews and rating helpful in finding hotels that would suit my family needs the best. You could fly direct to KL and then take MAS or Airasia to Langkawi. http://www.agoda.co.uk/asia/malaysia/langkawi.html http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g298283-Langkawi_Kedah-Hotels.html http://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?sid=8fb7074dbfdad303bed86efc6e6d5b0e;checkin_monthday=8;checkin_year_month=2011-7;checkout_monthday=16;checkout_year_month=2011-7;class_interval=1;offset=0;score_min=0;si=ai%2Cco%2Cci%2Cre%2Cdi;src=index;ss_all=0;;iata=LGK;origin=disamb;srhash=804551505;srpos=1

We are thinking of going to Langkawi in July or August. Is the weather Ok then or is it the rainy season? Hot and humid. Easily get tanned without spending too much time on the beach. You might even be happy when it rains a bit ;)

It's cheap to hire a car and easy to drive about, so I wouldn't worry too much about where it is.

2008 DH & stayed at Pelangi Beach Resort ................. LOVED IT!!! 5* all round. We don't have chicklets but I think the resort lends itself to those that do .... it's certainly spacious enough to accomodate all. We booked direct with the resort and sorted our own flights from HK to KL then onto Langkawi. http://www.langkawi-resorts.com/pelangi/ Enjoy Langkawi ..... its on our 'go back to one day' wish list!! x

We stayed at The Andaman on Datai Bay. The beach is stunning and the hotel is simply fantastic in every sense. Its a bit far out but for one week, we never had the need to leave the Datai Bay and on the last day when we did drive around the city, it was obvious that we were staying in the most beautiful place on the island! The Andaman and the Datai are two hotels next to each other and you can share facilities. The service is impeccable, they are amazing wit kids and the food is just out of this world!Enjoy your holiday:)

If you're going with kids I'd recommend the Westin. The private villas there are amazing and they have loads of activities going on.
