Hi, I have a maid (and her husband) who live in our maids room. An Arab lady sponsored her and is holding on to her passport. She as able to show me a copy though. She also has a valid employment card which looks fine (and so does her husband). I've been warned that I will probably be responsible for her because she lives with us.
??? Please tell me what I need to look out for. Tx

with you Claire, smiles... I would go further and say to your maid "I'll need you to move out until you are legally sponsored" she'll understand and take it from somebody who was once in your position, the sponsorship will move along sooo much quicker then. Don't worry about where she'll go, trust me, she will have access to a network of 'cousins' or whatever. Also, speak with immigration about maids 'hubby', like Claire says, he may not be her hubby. When mine wanted to have hers stay (and I think he was genuinely her hubby) immigration told me that I needed an attested marriage certificate for him to visit. They also told me that if he were to stay permanently, we would also need to sponsor him!:( Final words... do not be guilted into them staying until you are covered... you can get a fine of up to 100K and DH won't take kindly to having to front up in court to face the matter.... Not just court, Friend of mine's hubby was in Jail for a whole 24 hours until they agreed that he can go home and pay the 50K ! not nice ! <em>edited by mushypeas on 27/01/2011</em>

If she is living with you and doing all the maid duties then you are going to be responsible for all the associated costs that go with employing an individual in this country. EG, medical, visa, salary, ticket etc etc . I would also contcat her previous employer and find out if you are able to get a NOC, she hasnt been reported as absconded has she ?! If you dont want the responsibility of an employee then I suggest a maid from an agency to help you instead which is completly legal .. Can be a little pricey mind you.

You need to transfer her sponsorship onto yours - the previous sponsor will need to sign a NOC letter and go to immigration with you to transfer all the documents over. Otherwise, if caught - you could get a 100k dhs fine and your housemaid will be deported. Also, are you sure they are married - have you seen their marriage certificate. If they are not married then again this is illegal. If you do not sponsor this housemaid yourself she is working for you illegally. She will know that and so will the lady holding her passport.......

You've said on another thread that you are new to Dubai....and already have a maid & hubby living in your house.....gosh you move fast! :-) If you don't sponsor her then its illegal to have her living with you, regardless of her "valid employment card looking fine".
