As A Rancher says, same thing happens in our compound in AD. Something to be said for being in an semi independent like we were when in Dxb. The gossip and comparing seems to turn into bi@tching and everything is a drama and blown out of proportion
So a line needs to be drawn.
For some reason here it seems the more you give the more will be taken and soon you are uncomfortable in your own house. Most of us feel sorry for the ladies we employ because in the lottery that is life they were born Into so much less and it is so much harder to get out of it. But you have to remember that you are employing them. Your house , your rules. It really is a thin line.
Back to the op I think I saw a thread today of someone looking for a maid. I will look agai

It's worse in areas like the Meadows and Ranches as all the maids meet up and compare salary and conditions. In Arabic homes they tend to be more isolated - I'm not saying that's a good thingfor a maid but the maids around here have a bit of a hierarchy and like to show the others how well they are treated and how much they earn and what perks they get. Makes for a lot of discontent among the ones who feel hard done by.
When I first employed a maid she was full of sob stories and the phone was attached to her ear. She had no shame in yipping and yapping in her loud voice even waking up my newborn on occasion. She was also very demanding. My husband was away so she had never met him. He is Emrati and all that had to happen was for him to walk thru the door in a kandora. She was beside herself. She said she thought she was working for a western family. When he was around or ANY of my inlaws she completely became very professional. Whenever my husband would go away she would slack off and the phone was nonstop.
I called the agency and spoke to the owner who knew my MIL well. He told me all the girls he gets coming here for employment want to work for western families because " they are so stupid- they believe everything you tell them, do whatever you ask, give you everything and soon you run the house not madam"
I have to say also that there are very few Emiratis here that I know that have maid drama. The drama for them is not liking how they cook or clean but not any of this vindictive, stealing, or excessive control.
They pay them way less and very few have any time off. I have to give time off. I could never not give someone a day off. I don't want someone miserable in my house. They need that day, they look forward to it. Just like they need a mobile. However if I think thru all the jobs I had I was never allowed to talk all day on the phone making personal calls. So a line needs to be drawn.

it's hard because some of them are vindictive... I've heard horrible stories of what they put in your food, tea, etc and what they do to your kids when you aren't looking, if they feel you are being at all "mean" to them :-(they do that to 'kind' madams too.

She's a live in......
For the record, we have asked very nicely, we
have been firm regarding this and some other
issues, all to no avail.
She's stubborn and arrogant too :((
which is why we are releasing her.
I wouldn't want to pass her on to another family.
Sounds like it is a good idea to get rid of her! I understand that she is a live-in, but I suppose she has a room where she can leave her phone. Or maybe she sleeps under the kitchen sink, which could explain her behavior. Just kidding;)
confiscate until break times for personal calls if she can't respect your wishes. I preferred my maid to have her mobile with her so that I could contact her easily and personal calls were few and far between, that said we had other attitude issues and sent her packing so prob not the best person to hand out advice?!

IMHO....re maids & mobile phones....
I have to concur that if I had thought this through
I would have kept the phone we bought ours and
given it to her daily from 7pm to 7 am
because she tends to spend so much darn time
yapping all day, it drives me nuts. I have asked
her on several occasions to get on with things and save
chat time for later but it's like talking to a brick wall.
She has two phones, I guess one is for her calls
to and from the Philippines.
We'll be looking for new help in April, she's been here
two years and I feel it's time for her to move on.
If any of you ladies will be releasing a trustworthy one,
please try to get my attention via expatwoman, thanks!
For goodness sake, just tell her to not bring the phone with her in your house! Problem solved! Is it your home or hers?

Yasmine,
I really dont know, it is better to have a chat with my maid about that. I think 1500 is the minimum for a Filipino, that is what i have been told.
AnonDubai, very sad that we have to ask if a maid wants to work for an arab family as this is an arab country...I am european arab and I dont even mention the word arab or all maids run away screaming..
Annolaojo, what is her salary expectation?
My maid has a friend who is looking for a job. She comes highly recommended. If anyone is interested, call my maid on 0567579883.
