I am due to have a c-section at Medcare in a few weeks and just wondered what other people's experiences were of c-sections there, what to expect, things to be aware of with the nursing staff etc? The main thing I am concerned about is not getting to have that initial bonding period with the baby straight after the birth and the nurses taking the baby away while I am in recovery. I have already, and will continue to stress to the doctor that I want to be able to hold and feed the baby as soon as possible.

I had 2 c-sections in Medcare, one in 2008 and one last summer. Both times the baby was fine so no need for NICU. Both times I spent about half an hour (I think!) in recovery and after that time the baby was brought to me for breastfeeding (&during that half hour my hb was with the baby). I was then transferred to a private room. Tbh, I think you need the half hour recovery before you can breastfeed the baby (but then that's been my only experience so not sure what would have happened if they had passed the baby to me immediately after the birth) and, again imo, there's still more than enough time to bond afterwards to still have that initial bonding feeling. At no point during my 2 4day stays was formula ever mentioned to me. They did offer to keep the baby in the nursery in the night so I could have a sleep - but you don't have to do this, and they will bring the baby when he is hungry/or will wake him up when you tell them to. I also refused the bath and this was no issue.

When I had my baby there 2 years ago they seemed to put nearly every baby in NICU. I had a problem free pregnancy and a scheduled C-section so assumed that I would be shown my baby upon delivery start to feed asap. This was not the case and my baby did have several genuine issues when she was born. She was taken straight to NICU without me seeing her and DH went with her. I was stitched up and taken to recovery where I remained for 4 hours because there was no available room in the maternity suites. Thereafter I was taken to the general ward and only 8 hours after delivery was taken to my private room. At this point I had still not seen my baby and DH was with her. I had an idea in my head that everything would go as planned and was so disappointed and down when it didn't. In the end baby was absolutely fine, she was exclusively breastfed but I had to fight tooth and nail for that to happen and there was no issue of not bonding because she was not with me. So it all worked out fine but it was not a fairytale story!

just stand by your guns and get your DH to fight for you if necessary. They're hardly going to wrestle the baby from you. They're also very keen on taking the baby away to do the injections and bath... again, you can refuse anything that you are not happy about.
