Metro to the Gold Souk -- figured out!!!!!
Hi all, yesterday I was searching for how to use the metro and buses to get to the Gold Souk, since I don't have a car (or a license) and I quite like public transport. So I wanted to share a tip for anyone who may be trying in vain to also figure out how to get there.
I used the Wojhati (travel planner) from the RTA website, which suggested that I take the metro to Union, then transfer to the new Green Line and get off at Baniyas Square station and walk.
When I got to Union, I asked the always friendly RTA people about this, and they both said definitely DO NOT go to Baniyas station because it is too far away.
They recommended that I instead go to AL RAS station (also on the Green Line) and it would just be a few minutes walk to the souk.
So said so done -- Al Ras is definitely the best station to get out at!! The Wojhati was so wrong...
At Al Ras station, take Exit 2 to Al Khor Street. (The exit it really cool -- they have built it in Arabic style instead of the giant golden cockroaches that are the usual exits.)
As you come out of the exit, look behind you for a small Standard Chartered Bank on the corner. Turn right at the SCB and you'll head directly to the free Heritage Museum. Turn left as you hit the museum and continue down the road. By then you should see some tourists straggling around in the heat so you'll know you're getting close to the Gold Souk. There are a few different entrances to the Gold Souk itself but it doesn't really matter which one you enter. Look for the huge wooden archways and you'll know you've found it.
Word to the wise -- going there alone can be a bit intense! Lots and lots of touts and very aggressive salesmen (the important word there being MEN) who never leave you alone. Ugh.
Anyways, hope this is helpful to anyone else trying to navigate Dubai without a car.
