Thanks again for all the advice. My son did join a gym and slimmed down a bit and was proud of himself but the dreaded summer holidays with holiday eating has undone that. But I am pleased to say that since returning to DXB he is showing self motivation for portion control and excercise. MRSQ, thanks very much to you and your son for the offer. I will have a careful think about it.

Hi Elms. just wanted to add that I have a teen who, in the last 10 months, has lost nearly 30 kgs< I mentioned your post to him, and he made the comment that, until your son wants to lose weight, he won't, no matter how hard YOU try. Once he decides he is no longer happy to go on as he is, then he will make the effort needed to lose weight. Those comments are from my DS, not from me . In our case, DS decided last April that he wanted to get 'a bit ' fitter, and build up muscle strength and endurance. He played sports anyway, but finally realised he could be so much better than he was. He gradually built up the amount of exercise he did, starting by running less than a kilometre a day and getting red faced at that. He now regularly runs 10 kms several time s a week, and also does controlled weights etc. He does an hour of crossfit once a week, and loves it. His diet wasn't really the problem in that his meals were balanced and nutricious, but the amount he ate was! He now eats whatever he wants, but in smaller portions. If he does occasionally have a blow out he increases his exercise over a couple of days to compensate. Your son needs to find an activity that he likes. My DS found that he loves running. As his weight dropped he discovered other forms of exercise that he enjoyed, but would never have tried when he was bigger. But it's not easy - which is why your son needs to get to that starting point in his own head first. DS ha ssaid he will meet yours just to chat to him if you want - informal , as one teen to another. But he won't try and persuade your DS at all. He will just show him photos from last year to show what he has achieved, and will be there to encourage your DS if he wants (we don't live near you so it would be on the phone ). But DS wants to point out that your DS could just get really embarrassed and not want to know at all, so be prepared for that as well. edited by mrsg on 09/03/2012

Best of luck for your son. My DD is overweight and I know how difficult it is trying to help your child maintain their self esteem at the same time as them acknowledging their weight issue. We ended up taking DD to the doctor, she's now controlling what she eats by writing everything down and she cycles to and from school a couple of days a week (DH runs along side and he complains more than she does!). I must also admit to resorting to bribery. Hair straighteners for the first 6KG lost (she's nearly there).

whoever you decide to use, make sure they have experience training children. Children are still growing and their bones have not set yet. You son would need to have fun doing what he is doing and that needs a trainer who can provide that for a 13 yr old....so, make sure your trainer is knowledgeable about childhood weight control and not just adults as you don't train them the same.

Do you need someone who can sort his diet out or can you do that? I really believe that it is 70% diet and 30% exercise. If you don't get the food right, no amount of exercise will make the difference. My friend used one of those food delivery companies for her teenage son with a weight issue and that made a huge difference.

Hi, I would like to find a personal trainer to help my 13 year old son loose his excess weight and build his muscle density. I am looking for a dynamic motivational chap. We are based in the Meadows area. Are you able to recommend anybody please? I would be grateful for positive/ constructive advice only, thanks (I have already tried all the obvious things and have one child who eats everything and one child who eats nothing).
