Playtime at school during hot months

Hi there, I've just moved to dubai and have 2 primary school aged children enrolled in a school here. We've just moved from the UK and of course it's too hot to play outside, but do schools usually have indoor facilities to accommodate these months? I've asked my children this and by the sounds of it they stay in their classroom all day and even eat lunch in there. Is this the norm here? I just assumed they would eat lunch in a hall and have access to the indoor gymnasium or school facilities during hot months, but doesn't seem to be the case. Feel a bit sad to think they're in their classroom all day long and can't run around, but perhaps that's how it's done here and I'm just not used to it. Any other experiences or input would be appreciated :)

Welcome to Dubai! It’s true that many schools keep kids indoors during the hotter months, but facilities vary. Some have indoor gyms or activity rooms, though not all use them daily. It might be worth checking with the school—your kids might not mention the short breaks they do get!

It’s totally understandable to feel that way, especially coming from the UK where outdoor play is more common. In Dubai, due to the extreme heat during the summer months, many schools do keep kids indoors for safety reasons. Some schools may have indoor play areas, but it's also common for kids to stay in their classrooms or have lunch there, especially when temperatures are soaring. Schools here often have air-conditioned spaces and other indoor activities to keep the children engaged. It might take some adjusting, but rest assured, your kids are in a safe and supportive environment while the heat makes outdoor play tough!

Welcome to Dubai! Yes, many schools keep kids indoors during hot months, but some do offer indoor gyms or activity areas. It’s best to check with your school directly about their facilities.

Thank you so much for your reply and warm welcome :) yes guess it takes some getting used to. They did one playtime outside since being here. I hope by end of Sept they will do this regularly. I can feel the weather changing slowly :)

Hi and welcome to the sandpit! :) One of my kids studied where lunch is typically eaten in the school's courtyard, so during the hotter months they were informed to eat in their classrooms but when the weather gets cooler (late September/October - April/May), they'll resume eating, playing, and running outdoors. They have an indoor gymnasium but I was told by my kid that it's used by the school's sports teams/athletes for lunch break practice. My other teen studied where there's an indoor school cafeteria so they always had their break there or in the halls. So I guess it just depends on the school! :)
