As an added bonus Polar HRMs will often work with commercial gym equipment - wear the monitor and the data displays on the treadmill/eliptical/bike etc. No guarantees and it does work across brands but probably not a primary reason to buy that brand.

I have a Polar RS200sd with footpod that I'm selling if you are interested. I have loved using it but wanted GPS functionality so upgraded to a Garmin. I used it for running and only to track time, distance and intervals so the heart rate monitor has never been worn/used. It has loads of functionality I can't begin to describe so here are specs from Polar: http://education.polarusa.com/Products/cs/rs200sd.asp?cat=consumer

I have used some sort of Polar HRM for the last 15 years or so. As they die, I just go out and buy the latest model. I would thoroughly recommend them for accuracy, reliability and consistency in after sales maintenance etc. I just LOVE them. They are user friendly, durable and I love getting the bio-feedback - it is so much more motivating to clock how you are improving. I currently use a Polar F11 which has been superceded - probably by the FT60, looking at the product catalogue. Now I'm not sure what prices are like in Dubai, but where I'm from you can get the FT60 for just under the equivalent of 1000 AED. It has some great features - among them: - Setting target Heart Rate zones - Measuring and tracking your current level of fitness via Maximum oxygen uptake. - Calculating calorie expenditure, based on your age, gender, current weight and how hard you've been working out. - Setting up a weekly training programme based on the objectives you wish to achieve. There's a lot more to this watch though, so you're best to google it and read up then seek your best price. If you are someone who is motivated by the bio feedback it is well worth paying a bit more to get that in your watch. I personally find it lifts my effort, particularly when doing things like intensity training.

Yes, Polar are a good speciliast brand, that give you a good accurate measurement - anything polar branded should do the trick - but they do purely just do heartrate (that I know of). Top of the range is garmin (1300aed) as it tracks (through GPS) your training, creates maps showing distance covered (literally the roadmap of where you went) gradient covered etc, and it sync's with your laptop... very clever, but OTT for your requirements CT... Just a bit. I just want to make sure that I am working out effectiively rather than just working out. (That makes sense to me :)) Thanks for the advice ladies.

The guy helping me was pretty knowledgeable, but not expert. In his defense, the stores are new and technical questions about heart rate monitors are probably not in the training manual. I think Polar are meant to be excellent (that's not the brand I got - I think mine begins with a Q, but I wouldn't put money on it).

Thanks Bisha. I am not under Doctors orders I am wanting to keep track on my heart rate but calories and fat grams burned sounds interesting too. Were the staff helpful with information? Last night I was looking at heart rate monitors in a sport shop in IBN Battuta...Cheapest was 550, yikes! The make is POLAR, www.polar.F1 edited by Mulberry7 on 09/01/2011

I just bought one last week at a new shop called Decathlon in the Mirdif City Center mall. Of course I can't remember the brand, but it works and cost ~AED250. They have a whole wall of the them. The one I bought also tells me my calorie count and grams of fat burned - if you want one that does heart rate only, then they had some cheaper ones. I'm not using mine for medical reasons, though, so if it's on Dr's orders, don't take my advice.
