We are considering a temporary move to Dubai for my husband’s job. We have an infant and a 2yo. I will probably not be working (at least initially). Housing and medical insurance are included in his package, schooling would be if our kids were old enough (nursery is not). His company also includes use of a car but we will likely have to get a second one for me. Take home pay will probably be 25k AED per month and I’m just apprehensive this is enough? We’d like to have our older son in a part time nursery program (he attends one now) and eventually for the youngest but probably not until he’s 2. I just want to be sure we have enough to actually enjoy life there rather than just get by- decent food and activities, a bit of travel. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I’m sure you’ll be fine ....... have you been out here before ? ..... I would always encourage anyone to visit if possible before taking the plunge (many don’t) at least it will give you the chance to look around where you’ll be living and get a feel for the place. You won’t need to pay a beach membership :) there are lots of wonderful public beaches here that don’t cost anything beyond parking costs.

Thanks all, we will definitely have to take a look at our expenses and try to find the Dubai equivalent. On the plus side, we’d be coming from a pretty high cost of living area where rent and full time daycare suck up a lot of our earnings, so I wouldnt say we live an extravagant lifestyle. I think our “splurges” would be a cleaning service and some sort of pool/beach membership. Alcohol and other high priced import items we’d prinanly just buy less frequently (sigh). Ranstone, I think the housing is in Bur Dubai area. We hear it’s ok, not great but most just go with it rather than spending money on a nicer place.

The salary is manageable but does really depend on what sort of income and lifestyle you are used to. To live a comparable lifestyle as a western expat you do need a reasonable uplift in salary. A couple of serious things to consider with provided housing are the size, quality and location. Do some serious research on this because this alone could have a massive impact on whether you love or hate Dubai. Not all provided housing is that great.

Yes that is after housing. They will cover electric and water too and the apartment is furnished so hopefully we won’t need to buy too much furniture. It’s possible his salary will be slightly higher after a year but just trying to be conservative. I’m just not sure this is all worth it!

Is the 25k after housing has been paid ? You will get very differing opinions from different nationalities as to whether 25k is enough. You can live on 25k but it’s not a huge salary for a western expat family of 4, particularly if you start eating into it with nursery fees and a second car. It also very much depends on your current lifestyle and expectations. Also factor in getting yourself setup which will vary depending on what is covered as part of the package. If you need to pay housing from the 25k then you may struggle.
