new to this all and very confused. some schools follow KG1 and KG2, others Nursery and Prep....the newer terms I hear here are Pre-K and FS1?? and are there really issues going from one system to the other? tks.

yes, following the UK curriculum, children start proper school in the academic year they turn 5, so your son *should* be starting his first year of Primary (whatever that may be called - Reception/ FS2/ KG1) this coming September (2011). To hold him in nursery for another year would mean that he misses out on an important year in Big School.

Jumeriah Jane you were answering..... yes to "too late" or yes to "he will still be able to" :) yes you can move into a later year but note most schools here go by sept 1 or 15 for age cut off dates not December. So your son would be going into FS2 next year if you went to a BC school here not year 1. There are more and more places appearing, panic not. If he turned 4 last month and you want to keep him at the same school for kg2 next year, he will turn 6 at the british school the year after which will mean he will go into year 1 (which I don't understand, I thought kg2 was equivalent to year 1)...

Its possible to move. Possible but not easy! You are far better to place your child in the Reception class and then let them go into year 1 from there as those are the years that have the biggest wait lists in the BC schools here.

KG1 is FS1 is Nursery KG2 is FS2 is Reception In British Curriculum type schools. Actually for equivalent age year: KG1 (IB & US) is FS2 (BC) and KG2 is Year 1 :) And i stated in BC type schools, meaning this range, i did not state IB or US!

Some schools use Reception as first teaching year and then year 1 to 6 which i think is english but in Scotland we would have Primary 1 to Primary 7 after Nursery. In Scotland they would go into Primary 1 at 5 and Nursery would be from age 3 to 5 (used to be 4 to 5 but added 3 year olds a few years ago)

It has to do with the different curricula. KG is used in the US (aka Kindergarten). I posted this yesterday, but I find it really informational: http://www.gemsworldacademy-dubai.com/server.php?show=nav.01p009004 It shows the grade levels and ages of children in comparison between the US/Euro and UK curriculum. Hope that helps! In my day, Kindergarten was 1 year, not 2...so quite confusing for me too.
