Something really weird happened last night and I am not really sure how to judge this.
While I was walking by, a couple came to me with their kid and started telling me about their situation of not being able to find a job since 2 months, having nothing to eat, baby is hungry etc etc
So out of natural instinct I wanted to help them. I am not a fan of giving cash so i took them to a nearby grocery and got milk and biscuits for the kid. While i was waiting for my turn at the cashier, the lady comes and puts a large packet of butter as well!!
I was surprised and annoyed at the thought.
She could have asked for more milk or more baby food but butter????!

Oh no! we are new here and just got done re the car and no money to get back to Saudi as brother died!! Fortunately we only had AED50 on us. I never thought there would be scams here :( Well, we can never change the fact that they want easy money. They are going to use our sympathy in order to survive. I think they just need to start finding a job or a work.

Oh the UAE scams. I thought these had all but died out Usually its the guy that approaches you in the street with a wound on his arm asking for money. Ask him to accompany you to the pharmacy to get him so antiobiotics and dressings and watch him slink away. The family who run out of petrol and have no money but are driving a top of the range SUV. I read somewhere that a professional beggar here was found to be making thousands out of nice, caring people. It may be cynical of me but it sounds like a huge scam.

Unfortunately there are scammers using this method to get free shopping.

Taken for a ride I'm afraid. One of the oldest tricks in the book - having a child in tow so you take pity on them. Lots of 'out of towners' come into the UAE during big holiday periods to take advantage of others. Well, you said it right there. All we want to do is to help because of our sympathy but it's hard to accept them are making abuse of the good thought we have

Ya now even I feel so. I came across them in BurJuman. I enquired on where they are living, they said with their brother and that they are going to leave soon. I feel next time I should just call the Police and ask them to solve the matter Thanks ladies...

A difficult situation - it was kind of you to help - if it wasn't a con. I find something like that a bit scary - especially as you seem to have been alone. And as you say - ''butter''?? - not the first thing that springs to mind for someone without any money. Did you ask them about their Visa situation and whether they had any family or friends or had contacted their embassy or charity for advice etc.? They should probably leave ASAP. Where in Dubai(?) did it happen?
