ladies,
i am very interested to know what other mums in dubai allow thier daughters to do..
i know all kids mature differently but we are talking about year 9s..
what curfew do you have for them
do you allow them to take taxis
every "gathering" seems to have more than just coca cola these days and it is a worry..
do you allow them take buses?
do they go to the malls alone?
if they are visiting a friends, do you speak to the parents .
i would like to hear opinions as to what you think is acceptable

I was in MCC on Thursday night and I saw a young girl - looked no more than 14 wearing a super mini sequinned skirt and strapless boob tube with skyscraper stilettos and a face full of makeup. At first I smiled to myself, thinking how she probably snuck out of the house wearing substantially more than that and that she probably didn't know how silly she looked. Then I realised that a significant proportion of the food court were probably using rather different words to describe her. My point is, did her parents know she was out like this? Who wouldn't object to their 14 year old being out at 7pm in a food court? Sometimes you just can't protect them from themselves. I would object. Object to what? To a 14 year old going to a mall? It was only 7pm. I was presuming that the parents would have objected to what she was wearing but that they were not aware.

Do you choose who your teens can have over to the house? DD wants 3 friends over this w/e and I have only permitted one of them. I don't like one of the others and the 3rd one is a bit 'iffy' and I am undecided about her as yet. I know it is my house and I can decide, but wondered who else does this?

that would be my reaction too, but we can't really go around criticizing other people for the lives they choose to live either. we have enough restrictions, rules and regulations to deal with as it is.

assuming that she is indeed 14. i met a girl last night who is fully developed with a gorgeous body, long, thick hair, stunningly beautiful face with amazing poise and style. french girl so by the way ;-) i asked her what she was studying as she was clearly a 19/20 year old. i am still shocked. this girl is still 12 years old. she will turn 13 soon. <em>edited by citywoman on 31/01/2011</em>

Ouaouh ! 19 years old... With very high expectations like this, they will probably have to lie to you very soon, you don't leave them other options. At 19 years old you are not really what you call a teenager anymore. To be scared of everything is a strange way to educate someone. They need to breathe, to have some freedom to grow up. Whatever you do they will have to make their own experiments of life, good and bad. Your sisters will not necessarely lie to you because you don't check or double check. Trust, confiance are important words for a relationship. Good luck i agree that the rules are a wee bit extreme. where did she write that the girls were 19 though? she said they were 17 or do i read with half open eyes?

I mean, imagine having to wear your purse on your wrist! How unfashionable is that! What if you want something bigger to keep your makeup bag/phone/camera/organiser/book or whatever in?? Your sisters are 18 and 19 after all - not 13 and 14! Unless you've had some bad experiences with them where they've taken advantage and taken the p1ss. Debs HH Grade 9, ( aged 13/14) no taxis,unless with an adult accompanying .Drop at mall and pick up or use bus if there is one available . Wait at Mall if you are concerned what could or could not be going on. Know her/his friends and are they wise company to keep ? If going to a party , Yes , ask to speak to parents or when dropping off just go in and saw hello I will pick my son/daughter up at 11pm or 2am so you have met the parents. Collecting do same ! From what I keep hearing from friends, The teenagers are ruling the roost too much and don't want parents to go to door to collect them and say phone my mobile and I will come out and parents are allowing the teens to dictate. Parents need to know other parents to help keep an eye on the teens. There is too much pressure on youngsters from friends, other teens, drugs, *** and alcohol and getting younger and younger. Adults need to take responsibility for their welfare .

gold in glitter, tks , i have enforced most of your points and love the one about send me the photo of where you are and the group you are with, that is brilliant,, can you tell me what the wristlet is? No 12, about not doing anything that would embarass them later if it were posted on fb or internet is a very good point.. tks ps what ages are your sisters, if you dont mind me asking and are you going to relocate to dubai? :) a wristlet is a wallet/purse that they have to wear on their wrist, it comes with a strap. if one of them says they lost their wallet/lost a cell phone then i'm not very lenient. My sisters are 17 going on 18. (I'm 26) so I don't get taken seriously unless I rule with an iron fist. One of them will stay here in London (she's in University) and the other will be coming to Dubai with me before she enrolls in University in Dubai.
