I notice many ladies (Indian) on my facebook change their names after getting married. I don't mean just their last name but even their first names :\: What's this about?

Actually many people who believe in Numerology and astrology change their names and opt for those names that are best suited to their horoscope !! So why do their parents not give them names that are best suited for them when they are born, instead of waiting until they're married? Have you had a name change or dual name? Well... I am not sure if I would be able to explain it perfectly or not... Suppose your parents gave you a name that was quite a craze in those days. 20 years later, the kid kinda feels embarassed about having such an outdated name. So he/she readily agrees for a name change. Thats one side of it and that happens with both males and females... Secondly, if the inlaws press on the girl's side to go for a name change. then the girl takes up the new name. This is usually done by inlaws just to match the name with the groom's name (as in if the groom is SUN then the bride would be SUNLIGHT ) or some astrologer might have asked them to change the name of the bride for good luck etc... And if you go by the numerological aspect, I have seen people changing names even at the age of 40... :) Well, No..I never had a name change..My mom did !!! But for no astrological reason.. Just coz my Granny wanted her to go for a name that granny had chosen for her daughter. But grandma never had a daughter and she used this name for my mum !! Thanks CW for the elaborate explanations! So how many ladies on EW have had a first name change? :D

In some communities its a custom, that the mother-in-law or the inlaws decide upon a new name for the bride and its the bride's wish if she wants to take up her new name. The people in the inlaws side know her by the new name but friends/relative/acquaintances prior to marriage know her by the old name... So since they are with their new names on FB, they put their old names in brackets so that its easy for everyone to recognize her.. For Eg.. Before marriage -- CHIGGY WIGGY After Marriage -- Biggy Diggy (Chiggy Wiggy) edited by ChiggyWiggy on 04/01/2011 This is very interesting. I thought maybe it has to do with numerology or something. I asked a few people and didn't get any clear answers so I posted it on here. Seems very simple, I thought it might be something really complicated and involving numbers and all that. Thanks CW! Or should I call you BD now :)

if they are on your facebook, i presume they are firends - if you wanna know the reasons that they have changed their names - why not ask them......:) They aren't on my list, they are people who I know of, but not personally (like from school, uni etc) and who I share common friends with. So it would be weird if I just sent them an inbox message asking why they changed their names hehe.

LOL I've noticed a few do it after finding religion again, often adding things like 'faith' or 'mercy'.
