Dear friends:

We are new arrivals in Dubai for my husband's next posting and our attempts to use contact our family through Vonage (VOIP) have been unsuccessful. We were told that, in order to use FaceTime, Skype, etc we would need to install a VPN. Would any of you be so kind as to advise us on this issue? Thank you very much And have a great week ahead,
Dd

Any free VPN available in Dubai?
you'd be hard pressed to find a free VPN - most charge upwards of 300 Dhs for the year subscription. there are a couple of great ones that work here but i'm hesitant to write them on a public forum since authorities tend to clamp down/block them. a quick google search, im sure, will show you some good suggestions. the one we use begins with E

if you husband working in an office then you can use VPN to connect through the office internet and your call will work smoothly. Otherwise you can try out https://protonvpn.com

I have a VPN that I pay £5 per month for, works great for iplayer etc but I found that moving from an area where Du was my provider and FT worked, to an area where Etisalat is now my provider FT is awful, drops out all the time. I'm not very techy so maybe need to investigate more, dd-wrt etc

A plea to the new ladies on this forum - please don't ask for specific names of vpn providers on here - they are illegal, and hence easily get blocked if discussed, and those of us who reply on them (for streaming live BBC etc!) would not be impressed. As with most things in life, Google is your friend. Thanks for understanding :)

We use vonage. We have a special VPN router with ddrt that allows us to have a UK phone number. Please don't ask what that is because I haven't got a clue! DH says there are companies that will do the whole thing for you - vpn4sip.com. Skype to Skype video works fine without a VPN.

Not for Skype to Skype but to dial a landline or mobile from Skype you may need a VPN (I do).

Stix is absolutely right - no VPN needed for Skype or FaceTime.

You should be able to Skype without a VPN.
