Lesley I will see if I can find out for you. At the moment all I've heard is that they're evacuating people in [b'>low lying areas along the coast only[/b'>. They don't have room for everyone in the evacuation centres so if your house is not in an area that will be affected by a tidal surge (up to 7m in height in the worst zone), they are asking people to stay in their homes, bunker down with mattresses etc in their bathrooms or laundries. Frankly, I think some people's houses might be safer than those big evacuation centres with all that roof space (generally they are school halls, university basket balls courts etc). An online mate of mine who lives in Cairns has a webcam set up outside her house and is streaming live to the internet. So if you want to see it while it is still light and before the cyclone has actually hit, here is the link: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/cyclone-yasi-home-webcam ETA: OK, I am back, LOL. SJ Aussie: My friend said the same thing earlier today. Except that all the birds were quiet and the dogs were behaving strangely. The animals, I think, feel the drop in air pressure and get anxious. Arohadxb: Alas, they are expecting to even lose mobile coverage as towers will be knocked out and networks overloaded, but yes, good idea to keep it charged. I did hear someone say that sometimes when calls don't work, sms does. Don't know if that's true though. OK, will keep stuff coming as I hear about it... unfortunately the worst will happen at night. So with the power out, these live streams will be next to useless unless people are doing talkovers.

Thanks SJAussie- your words are very comforting. It's a horrible feeling, sitting here(Vic),& watching the disaster unfold. It will be 24 + hours of no contact that will make it very difficult. At this stage,I'm still able to make ( sporodic) contact with mum,which is a blessing for us both.

Spoke to my Mum and Dad further down the QLD coast this morning and they said it was s unny clear day, no wind but stinking hot. They have the TV on continuously watching updates but were finding it hard to belive that this is going on only several hours drive above them.

Some evacuation centers are full in Cairns & they are trying to bus people to other centers.Window of opportunity to evacuate Cairns has passed now. Only those who may be affected by storm surges were requested to evacuate- everyone else has been told to take shelter in their homes.

Lesley65, I believe they are just focusing on evacuating people from the flood affected areas at this stage, so mainly those on the coast. My parents don't have to evacuate...yet, as they are 2metres higher than the maximum cut off for threat of a tidal wave. HTH I am sick with worry, this is not good.

Winds have started to pick up apparently. It's knocked out the weather station's signal on the one of the island's on the way in. King tide at 9pm Queenland time (currently 1.53pm) and the cyclone expected to cross the coast at about 10pm. The eye of the cyclone is so wide (the eye alone is wider than Cyclone Tracy) that it could hit a very large area of coastline and because it is so large, it will take a long time to wind down and so inland areas will be hit too.

Yes, we have woken to some dire news this morning. Category 5 (same as Katrina) and mandatory evacuations. I feel sick to the stomach for all the people and animals living in that region. The evacuation centres are not taking animals, I believe. We are all praying for a miracle that at the last moment it will do an about face and head back to sea. For those of you with friends and family in that area, we hare thinking of them and sending our thoughts and prayers that they will find some way to be safe.
