Thanks AmyAus ;) Yeah, it'll cross the coast as a Cat 4 or possibly 5 (?) then it should weaken to a Cat 1 as it moves west. But I did read somewhere tonight that they expect it won't weaken so quickly like other cyclones therefore leaving towns out west with a very high threat. :(

If I am interpreting that correctly (?) and based on some of the articles I have read that the BOM Senior Forecasters have been quoted in, it is because when it is expected to hit @ 1am it will be a cat 4, and normally when they make land then loose intensity so by 1pm - 12 hours later - it will have dropped back to a cat 1. The problem is the intensity when it first hits land. <em>edited by SJAussie on 01/02/2011</em>

Thanks SJAussie. Many years ago we (in Cairns) had the exact scenario they are having now... huge cyclone heading straight for Cairns and it was a big one and was expected to basically flatten Cairns, that night we slept downstairs with our backpacks at the end of the mattress and fully clothed in case we had to evacuate the house. In the middle of the night the cyclone did a perfect 180deg turn and went back out to sea. Gone! It was truly a miracle! The same has to happen again... just has to.

I WAS going to post that surely the 2000km is a mistake maxindubai, as that would be almost as big as QLD, but then I looked at the image and had to go change my jocks. Lots of prayers needed. No they haven't as their house is high enough above sea level for them not to be affected by the tidal surge thats expected. As far as leaving Cairns... the cyclone is so huge in size that wherever they go will be badly affected. They took all the hospital patients to Brisbane.
