Oh Shellly - *hugs*. This is like a bad movie. I hate disaster movies. I want to fast forward it now and come out on the flip side. Apparently there are 6 60-something year olds up there just south of Cardwell who chose not to evacuate. There is no way 6 adults could have missed the media coverage urging everyone in the tidal zone to leave by the end of yesterday. A couple of hours ago, the police received an emergency call asking them to come and evacuate this group. Obviously, they can't. It is just too dangerous out there to risk lives to save lives. These people have been told to make their way to the second (top) storey of their unit block in the hope that they might avoid being swept away by the surge that will come. Silly, silly pople. Some of the shelters have been turning people away since midday (it's now 10pm here). All in the directly affected areas are closed and people have been told to stay home and bunker down. When you think that around a million people will be affected... Awful. Oh gosh, those poor people. I hope there were no children turned away. What would you do? where would you go? Sure as H3ll you can't outrun the thing! Green-ish I feel exactly the same way. But I will not function tomorrow if I don't get to bed soon. And they are saying it will still be Cat 1 or 2 (prob 1) by the time it hits Isa!!!

Yungaburra 1 hour west of Cairns has lost power..... I'm really having a tough time wrapping my head around the sheer size of this thing!! A friend just contacted me on FB saying how bad it is in Bowen...that must be 500km from Cairns?? And the worst is yet to come.

I am SO tired yet I just can't go to bed. I feel like I owe everyone up north my night of worrying and watching the TV. They're saying the wind gusts up to 290km/hr with an average of 160km/hr lasting up to THREE HOURS!

Good thing is in times like this if someone looses their roof the neighbours would generally welcome them with open arms if they were able.

Good luck to your friends Shellly. I reckon after this there may be a few more cyclone shelters built. Far out! QLD Police Service site on FB has just reported a 9.5 m wave measured off Townsville. Significant flooding in low lying areas. http://www.facebook.com/#!/QueenslandPolice Storm chasers back at their hotel for 30mins or so then heading into CBD to see how things are going. Apparently it has slowed enough to mean it will make landfall after the high tide, so less of a storm surge. Bad news is because it has slowed, the wind will be around for longer than anticipated. Oh, well, they must be the storm chasers that came over from Darwin (I think) earlier in the day. They were interviewed on the news earlier tonight. Swore they knew what they were doing. Apparetnly they've been studying these storms for 10 years or more and chasing them for about 6 I think. The equipment they had was incredible. They feel it is their mission to bring the images to the world. Having said that, I think they said earlier on that Ingham was not going to have the winds reaching 300kph. Pink Towel back up now.

Your mum sounds like she's thought through everything and got well prepared. Have found another live stream still working via one of the storm chasing forums. Yes, I am feeling really sick about all this too. There is nothing positive in any of the reports. Been up since 5.30am now and I don't know how I'm going to drag myself away and get to bed. I think Pink Towel's just gone off air temporarily because there was some guy on teh chat section causing problems for them. She's said she's text onto FB if she goes off air permanently adn let us know. Mind you, some huge piece of tin just went flying past, so things must be startign to get hairy.

They have the bathroom sorted with mattresses and pillows even have bicycle helmets ready in case they are needed for protection. Photo albums and other valuables are in an esky in the boot of the car incase the roof blows off. SO Aussie to whack your valuables in the Esky! :D I really hope all is 'ok' in the morning shellly. xx LOL great idea! I can't get on to any live streams anymore except the Innesfail one. They've all crashed it seems. And even the on site tv news crews are now leaving their coverage and going for cover. Things must be getting bad. But... the Pink Towel has it's own facebook page now and is being nominated as the new Australian Flag! http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=685200179#!/pages/Pink-Towel/143482055712616 Trust the Aussies to find some humour in yet another disaster! red towel stream just shut down now. much concern if red towel goes there won't be another put up as is too dangerous to go outside. They hope to go live again later in the night if they can.
