Oh I sure can imagine how difficult it must be to be on the other side! I remember being on the other side myself back home with only a few applicants through selected headhunters, my hiring process was a breez! Thousands of applicants with only 50 qualified? Oh dear!

Considering we don't set a specific salary but request our applicants to advise their salary expectation when they apply, Personally, i dont bother with companies that don't set a salary range. It says to me that they are only willing to pay the bare minimum...

It may feel like its impossible to find the right job, or any job here in fact, but it's equally difficult on the other side of the process. We've been actively / looking / advertising to fill 2 positions since the start of the summer. Received over 1000 applications, read all cv's in detail, sifted and short listed to 50 applicants we felt were suitable and on three separate occasions set up a day of interviews to see the short listed candidates, each time within a week of receiving applications. Twice none of the applicants bothered to turn up for their interviews, seriously, no one, on one day we got lucky and 3 people actually bothered to show, but only one of them on time. Considering we don't set a specific salary but request our applicants to advise their salary expectation when they apply, theoretically all short listed applicants are being asked to interview for a position they have chosen to apply for at a salary they have set themselves. But out of over 1000 cv's and 50 short listed applicants for 2 fairly standard office positions (admin & accounts), we ended up with 3 interviewees and only one who could be bothered to turn up on time, the other 2 didn't even call or apologise for being late. Frankly it's soul destroying trying to find good staff here, so just remember whilst you look for a job you need to make yourself stand out from the rest. You will find a job, it just takes so much longer as the job market is flooded with applicants not really cut out for the positions they are applying for. Good luck!!

Hi Tallybalt, Thank you so much for your very informative response. I do tend to agree with all of what you said. Especially the mafias. I'm willing to do admin works or entry level positions just so that I feel Im making a difference. I also agree with you on that this isnt the best time of the year for job seekers! Absolutely correct.

Dubai is not going to be the right labor market for everyone. I don't know exactly what you did but when you referred to customer service and support it may be that your sector, insofar as it exists in Dubai, is flooded with low wage earners and most hiring managers won't bother looking at a western expat's CV. The employment market is also decidedly not equal in Dubai. Many hiring managers have an bias for their own nationalities and I've heard people joke about the "Lebanese mafia" or "Iranian mafia" or, in the architecture field, the "English mafia." Dubai is also a small city. It may have a big name worldwide but it's still only a city of two million people (if that). It's not the employment market of New York or London or Toronto or Sydney. If you have a great CV and genuine management experience you will find a job. At some point. But it may be a slow and long process. So patience is needed. The one good news I may be able to offer is that the busiest hiring time tends to be January - April as companies have finished the fiscal year and received approvals for new hires, and that's coming up shortly.

Hi FairyDust Thanks so much for your quick reply. Much appreciated! I have applied at major headhunters and recruiters but to no avail. I also understand the fact that there are others who would do my job at a lower salary but my issue is I cant even get the interview? How do they know what my salary expectation is without even a single interview or at least a response?

Personally I wouldn't bother so much with dubizzle, but you need to use reputable HR agencies and head hunters. It can be very difficult to find work here. You're not doing anything wrong, there's just so much competition and I hate to say it, but you're up against people who would probably expect a significantly lower salary than you. Try companies like Clarendon & Parker.
