crikey no it's not just you at all!! have a look at the sleep section of the mumsnet talk forum (UK) and you'll see all manner of sleep issues.. either scares you or comforts you!! she's 6 months now and wakes for feeding at 10pm and 2-3am, only breastfed.. about to start solids so we'll see what that does! I'm not worrying about her sleeping through until she's 9 months, then if it's a problem I may start some gentle sleep training, but it's not an issue for me right now so I'll go with the flow (and it would take some serious noise to wake DH so I'm not worried about him!!)

Thanks Pentel, I guess it's comforting to know it's not just me whose going through/gone through this. How old is your DD now? Does she still wake twice a night?

lasted just over 2 weeks for me, I know it's tiring but if he settles straight after being given a quick feed then that must be easier to cope with than him crying for ages? when DD went through this it was every 2 hours as well and I just fed her in a zombie like state and went straight back to sleep. if I left her to the point of real crying it would wake me up properly and then I couldn't go back to sleep, she went from 4/5 wake ups back to 2 as suddenly as it started.. hang in there. maybe try co-sleeping for now until this passes (and it will!)

Not good :( I tried to pick up and just cuddle with the second waking but he wouldn't settle, just cried and cried so I ended up feeding him. He settles fine after a quick feeding. Was up 4 times last night. It's been 5 days now, when is this going to end?!

I hope it's just a small blip! Thanks for the advise. Will try tonight and see how we go.

I would try not doing it every time and see if he will settle with just being picked up or even just patted. Sounds like you are well on track so hopefully will just be a blip. See if you can get some part time help to get you through the worst of it and get some early nights yourself. It won't last forever but I know how much it can wear you down.:)

We have had scheduled naps for 2 months now and he self settles well without props or feeding to sleep so there is no concern in that department. Before this he was waking twice a night to feed which I didn't really have a problem with. He did start going through the night for a week before getting a cold and starting to teeth so it made it hard to have to get back up again. Just wasn't sure whether to feed him every time I got up or not. I am currently doing that just for a couple of minutes and he settles back down straight away.

No one can tell you whether to do CIO or not, its up to you if you choose that style of parenting. At this age they start to be addicted to sleep "props" like dummies, feeding to sleep etc. Now is the time to introduce scheduled naps (most likely 3 a day) and a fixed bedtime. Try and remove swaddles, dummys and rocking to sleep or letting him fall asleep on the boob. They have growth spurts at this age and do tend to feed more often or for longer especially when breastfed, try and get more day feeds in if you can. Also try and resist the pressure you might get from parents and in-laws to introduce solids early. They won't make him sleep better, its a brain development thing (4 month sleep regression) combined with addictions to props (baby has become more awake at end of sleep cycles so notices if they are not there). You don't have to feed every 2 hours though, there are shades of gray between that and CIO, try sometimes just holding him in your arms until he settles again and only giving 1 or 2 night feeds (most 4 months olds do still need night feeds, but not every 2 hours). If it was a really sudden shift from sleeping all night, it could also be teething or a virus.

I would say to feed him and try to ensure he feeds as regularly during the day. Does he settle straight after being fed at night? Much too young to be left to cry and a quick feed is better than letting him cry for an indefinate period. I went through this, lasted just over 2 weeks.. I coped by going to bed at 8pm!!!
