Dear ALL,

Can you please share with me your experience with giving birth in UAE. I am a Canadian, new to UAE and I am now pregnant with our first baby. I need to decide very soon, if I will deliver in Dubai, or if I should go to Canada. My due date is mid-Oct.

Your feedback and suggestion is greatly appreciated, thank you!

I am American and I have delivered both of my children here in Dubai. I have family and friends' experiences to compare mine to and based on that - I'd never go back to the US for a normal delivery. I delivered at the American hospital and City hospital and both are comparable. I found my midwife at City to be stupendous. Floor nurses at both hospitals are ok. My ob/gyn was Dr. Amir Nasseri and he was phenomenal. His level of care was much better than anything I would have received in the US. I never felt rushed during my appointments, which is common in the US and Dubai. Dr. Amir always listened to my wishes regarding the pregnancy and delivery. I delivered both babies naturally. I can't say enough good things about my experiences here in Dubai and my sisters back home are jealous of it.

I had my son in January this year in the American Hospital with dr. Mia Branch. I was never once pushed towards anything I did not want, and had him naturally without any meds at all. I was very happy with the hospital and my dr. and will definitely go there again if I have another baby in Dubai.

I had my 2nd daughter here at Medcare with my Obs from the Cooper Clinic. I had a natural delivery and was very happy with the care. I had a similar birth in the UK so we were very pleased that things were kept stress free. There was never a mention of a C-section from day 1 of my appointments but it is important that you decide what you want from the birth. For me I prefer to go with the flow and keep an open mind but I know some of my friends have had very specific birth plans. Your Dr should be able to guide you and take into account your needs. Good Luck!

I gave birth naturally at City, and was very happy. Although my LO didn't turn until the last minute, and I was told I'd probably need a C section for a weeks before I gave birth, they gave me all the time I needed. I will go there again, and wouldn't fly home as my husband could not get enough leave to stay with me and enjoy those special moments at the beginning. Woman all over the world give birth in all sorts of places. I'm sure you'll be fine. Good luck with what ever you decide. Motherhood is wonderful, welcome to the club :)

Interesting comments! I have my next doctor's visit on Monday; I will talk to her about my choices! Personally I would like to have natural birth, unless it puts both of our lives in the danger! In Dubai are Dads allowed in the delivery room?

Apparently when there is a global recession on, the amount of C Sections performed rise! I did read it costs more to perform a C Section therefore the insurers coin it in! insurers would be out of pocket if they have to pay out...only hospitals and doctors would make more money. In countries with publicly funded health care (like the UK), the higher costs make it harder for women to elect to have c-sections for non-medical reasons. In the US where it's all private/ insurance funded, the rate is likely to be higher as doctors dont have incentive to keep costs down.

This article highlights more women opting for elective c-sections, even where doctors have advised/ recommended natural birth... Sure, that's the focus of the article, but that isn't the only thing it highlights as in below: "Of about 200 deliveries each week at Corniche Hospital in Abu Dhabi, the largest maternity hospital in the country, about 65 are by c-section. [b'>The figures follow a rising global trend, and put the UAE on a par with the United States and Australia.[/b'>" 65/200 is 33% when WHO research suggests the best health outcomes are achieved at around 15% c-section rate. Regardless of who is pushing for the c-sections (patients versus doctors), the rate here is very high.

My general impression (both from what I've read and talking to people) is that most OB/GYNs here are very c-section and induction happy. This is just one example: [url=http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-news/health/were-not-too-posh-to-push-say-mothers-but-c-sections-still-rise'>link[/url'> May not be an issue for some moms to be and doesn't mean every doctor is, but it's something to give careful thought to when deciding where to delivery and by whom. This article highlights more women opting for elective c-sections, even where doctors have advised/ recommended natural birth... in my experience so far, my OB/GYN (city hospital) was pushing me for a natural birth even though I am inclined towards an elective c-section this time. After a hear-to-heart at my last apptmt, she has agreed to schedule one for me, but still told me to think about it in the coming weeks, and that I can even change my mind on the day of the procedure : )

Thank you ladies, I have great coverage through my husband's work. I will inquire about NICU coverage, never thought of it... God forbid! Currently I have an American Female OBGYN at the American Hospital, she's great but I feel that they are very laid back!

Can't comment on the delivery part yet (due mid-July) but so far my experience here has been much better than my 2 pregnancies and deliveries in the UK. I wouldn't consider going back to deliver no 3 there. Adequate insurance is critical though, as Meagle said. Don't know what Canada is like though, so can't compare with that!

Do you have good medical coverage that would cover a NICU stay in the event one is needed? If not, I would most definitely plan to return to Canada.
