I just found out that I have chickenpox...cant remember if I had them as a child...
I have 4 month old premie twins at homes, and since the rash broke out today, I have been holding them and feeding them and all. The doc said to avoid holding them from now on...but I am afraid that I have already infected them.

Any advice on what to do and how to handle things at home?
My mom is here to help and we have a maid (a really bad one though), but its hard for one person to handle the twins...

Well, DH has a hard time taking off from work...dunno how much of its him and how much his boss/work. We have argued over it many times before but its never been a good discussion. So for now its my mom and the maid...and me in the other room crying and getting depressed cuz I cant hold them when they are crying. DH told me not to, even though I told him this was an okay stage...Some of them have started to scab, so I guess I should not hold them anyhow... But now my worry is that they will forget their mommy, and forget how to bf. Is 2 weeks a long time to forget bf? And their mom? I am throwing the milk since yesterday as I have spots all over and am afraid that some might burst or something while I pump. What do you think?

Can they not get the vaccine to help mitigate any effects? or will they not give it to newborns? My husband had to get it after he was exposed as he hadn't had it as a child. Keep trying with the EBM, you must be making antibodies by now. Hope you feel better soon, its so hard having a newborn, harder having twins I imagine and can't even imagine adding chlckenpox to the mix, I think DH should take some more time if there is any way humanly possible.

Oh you poor thing. My guess is that if you have already come out in spots then you've already exposed them to it and not holding them won't make any difference now anyway. Don't add to your stress by not holding/feeding them when sometimes only mummy will do to soothe them. Can I ask what medicine you are on that's affecting your milk? Is it antiviral medicine? I heard that this only lessons the severity of it if started within 24 hours of spots appearing? Please check this with your docs but I suppose what I'm trying to say is that if your meds are not going to make *that much* difference to your condition, is it worth upsetting your milk for? Do you see what I mean? The best protection for your babies is your milk. I'd be setting up an appt with a very respected paediatrician for a second opinion if I were you. Can you call the hospital and ask to speak to a neonatal specialist? Your twins are a case that needs specialist advice and, with respect, not just an A&E nurse.

Oh and since our girls go to AlWasl, my husband took them to the emergency there. The doctor didnt see them but a nurse took our case to him (weird) and he said that there was nothing that could be done, just preferably dont hold them and if they get CP, bring them back.

I do have help...my mom is here and so is a maid, who holds and rocks the girls when needed. The girls are refusing the ebm now that I have started medicene for my chickenpox. They took it fine till yesterday. I am trying to stay in our room most of the day, but today I had to hold them a few times as both were crying and wouldn't be soothed by the maid. DH had to go to work, its very hard for him to take any days off this month. Has anyone had chickenpox in kids less than a year? I am very stressed about that as apparently it can be complicated...

DH's dad had CP when DH was newborn and wasn't allowed contact. You're the mum, so it's not much of an option, but take care of yourself and watch your babies for symptoms - which should pop up in about 10 days. If they do show any, then consult a Dr straight away and watch them like a hawk (which you would do anyway).

are they getting breastmilk? I think this gives them some level of protection too? Not 100% sure but I think this is only if mum has had chickenpox herself. Definitely worthwhile to chat with a Paed though, I can recommend Keith Nicol on Beach Rd if you don't already have one.

Oh, Big Hugs to you Tania520. I just had checken pox, my boys got it (4 and 2 yo), and I am pregnant as well.. When I was researching on the internet it was mentioned somewhere that newborns still have mother's antibobies from the womb so they might not get CP. Anyway, better speak to your pediatrician. Have lots of rest (if possible), really hope it does not get too bad for you all!

{{{BIG HUGS}}} My LO's just had chickenpox and I was so scared that I would get it (I am pregnant with twins) but I didn't. Apparently the very contagious part is before the rash breaks out so it may be worthwhile contacting a Paediatrician where you are just so that you have an action plan in the event that they get it to. Good luck!

Would you consider getting temporary help for a few days so you don't hold them as much? There are home nursing services that supply qualified pediatric NICU nurses or agencies that supply babysitters? Can your DH maybe take time off or maybe bringing in another family member to help? Otherwise wearing long sleeved shirts? Good luck, after you've come so far with the girls, this must be a very worrying time for you. xxx
