my 3 month old is teething. i have tried different types of teethers, wet/cooled washcloths, cooled carrot but he shouts all day long even if i held him (which is whole day and evening) since past 3 days i am getting anxious because of his shouting and crying so this morning i started crying with him.he is only sleeping for 10 hrs max. i was very excited to get try ergo baby carrier today hoping it would comfort him but he became so furious and talked in his baby language showing his displeasure. when i tried that at shop he was fine. probably i'll try again. what to do with his teething troubles? should i go to my paed?

I'm happy he has the all clear from your Dr. I have to ask though...a doctor that says your child is not getting enough exercise?? At three months old?? At that age your baby shouldn't be doing much more than lying down and 'chatting' with you or listening to a story or soothing music. I'm not sure if something has been lost in translation.. I'm a bit confused by that statement too, a 3 month old doesn't really "play" does he mean give him more awake time, more tummy time or what? I would not advise that a 3 month old be awake for 4 hours in a row, mine was good for around 90 minutes from when he woke up until his next nap, and that included breastfeeding time, so actual "playtime" was around 30 minutes at a time. Babies often cry and get unsettled because they are awake for too long, or get over stimulated (too much noise, too many toys shoved in their face, too much passing from person to person.) So be careful regarding that. If you are keeping upright after a feed due to vomitting, I wonder, is your baby being treated for reflux, if so it seems fairly likely that a lot of the pain/unsettled behaviour might be reflux pain. Has your Dr adjusted any medication as your baby grows. the dosage needs to be changed every few weeks as it is based on weight. If the current meds are not working then it might be time to try something new.

PS on the note of the ear infection. Mum was just telling me about her neighbours grandson at home, that everyone thought was a rather horrible whiny little boy (I know that's not nice to say... But it is what everyone thought). Anyway he'd been seen by Drs and nothing was found, so they just put it down to his little temperament. Well one day he came to his mum rubbing his ear and yellow and red liquid was all over his shoulder. The poor little dear had been putting up with a huge abscess in his ear canal, and it had not been found. He's like a different child and his mum said he's finally sleeping and happy. At least they got a happy ending.

One thing I found when mine were unsettled is that they needed more fresh air. Can you get outside and go for a walk with him in the 'cooler' hours of the morning/evening? It so hard in the Dubai heat! Daily sunshine (in small doses) is good for them and the non-AC air seems to help them drift off into a longer, more peaceful sleep.

yes i took him to doctor and he is better now. it looks like he misse his doc before his monthly checkup :) for 3 days he was very worse but i only held him and rocked him all day and night talking nonsense to him. he is fine now except for screaming for some time in morning and some time in evening which i reduce by distracting him.his gas pain is back along with the swelling in gums so that was the reason for screaming.he is normally a talkative boy :) doc said that he is not getting enough exercise and i should atleast make him play for 4 hours daily. i already do that but how to keep on increasing. he is small and takes feed after every 2 hrs or 1.5 hrs. i can't immedialtely play with him or he'll spit up all the milk!:\: being a FTP you run to doc or to the forum for everything :) i guess it gets better with time. edited by angel joy on 13/08/2012

So sorry to see your little one is suffering angel joy. Have you been to a Dr to double check all is well? I agree with earlier posts that this level and length of pain is not 'normal' for teething. I once thought my son was suffering only through teething, then found out he had a severe and agonising ear infection. :( Best to rule out all other possibilities so you both feel happier and get more rest. :)

Oh I feel bad for you. I totally remember days when I cried along with my LO, so you are not alone. I swear by teething powder. My husband calls it baby crack, as it settled our little one instantly, and he gets soooo excited when he sees the pack. My MIL FedExs us a monthly stash. It's brilliant stuff. Do you have anyone at home that could send you some? edited by flydiver11 on 11/08/2012 Which teething powder flydiver? I have no idea being a first time parent :)

HI Angel joy, Sounds like you are having a tough time. I agree with kiwispiers, it's very unlikely your baby is constipated if they are EBF. Their poop should be soft and if it is the consistency of peanut butter or looser, then it is not constipation, Breastmilk is a natural laxative, so there is no need to take a laxative if your baby is breastfed. I thought my baby was constipated at one stage (she is also EBF) but I was so wrong and just freaking out like a new mother would. She would strain often daily but no poop. In the end it took her 10 days to produce a stool and it was still soft, and very plentiful. She has done this a few times now and sometimes she will stool daily. It's also normal for this to occur in BF babies. Up to 14 days I have read in numerous sources. Secondly, if this truly is teething, among anything else that might be happening, then I have a few words to add to the previous posts. I freeze my EBM in little tubs and feed it to baby in tiny amounts as a shaved ice or ice cream. She loves this, she practices 'eating' and it is so soothing to her painful gums. She gets so excited when I bring out the 'ice cream'. I use Dentinox teething gel when things get tough at night time, if the Calpol is not close by. I went looking for teething rings that could be frozen, not knowing they could be a bad thing as previous posts mention. I found a foot shaped one in Mothercare, and this was the only one I could freeze according to the packaging. Otherwise I have soaked some new flannels/ face cloths in cooles boiled water and put in a sealable bag and frozen them. Bubs loves to suck on them. Hope things are better today anyway.

An EBF who does soft poo every few days is NOT constipated. Its only constipation if it comes out hard and it is extremely rare for an EBF to truly be constipated. From 3 months (or earlier) its very normal for them not to go every day. My son used to go once every 8 days from 3 months to 7 months. Their bodies know when to go, don't try and mess with that. Am I understanding you correctly, you are taking laxatives to try and make your baby go more often? Be careful that any drug you take is compatible with breastfeeding.

thank you everybody.. my baby is much more manageable ( touch wood) although he still throws fit and screams.even when he is screaming i keep him close to me and keep on rocking. i found after few minutes e calms down and whimper occasionally. breastfeeding helps only to certain extent. but i do every thing i can to keep him distracted. if everything fails then i just take him downstairs. we just watch from inside our building, the maintainance is work going on :) as for the meds i'll take him to the paed and would consult first for the teething gel. i have bought baby calpol but for very dire emergency. ps: unrelated to this but i have read that at 3 month babies do get constipated even the EBF. so totally natural if he goes every alternate days or even with 2-3 days gap. that said my baby is not happy if he does not have motion :) i have noticed he is way happy and calm on days he goes and even after going he starts smiling and looks realxed!! :D i can't help there can i ? i started taking laxative with very controlled diet so that both of our tummies remain fine. edited by angel joy on 10/08/2012

yes breastfeeding is a wonderful soother and actually has a great drug free natural analgesic effect. I recently stopped breastfeeding my 2 year old and it has been harder without that up my sleeve when he has teething pain.

Just want to tell you that this is only the beginning of the teething saga! DS2 lets us all know when a new tooth is erupting. He's now 2 yrs old, has 2 molars erupting and throws tantrums and screaming fits. He hates the teething rings. Never cared for the chilled veggie sticks or the wet wash cloths. The natural Hylands teething tablets only worked when he was younger. Prefers to bite on the hems of his t-shirts and demands to be breast-fed, which I am not responding to, hence the tantrums. Yes we have done AP and some natural parenting bits but he still throws fits when he's in pain. I go straight for the meds now and give him a good dose of Nurofen when his tantrum subsides. I sincerely hope that your baby is easier. edited by Apricot on 10/08/2012

Aw bless. You used to be able to get teethers that you could put in the freezer (water filled rings). Probably banned now LOL! My 2 had them and they loved chewing on them, the cold helping hot painful gums. LOL not banned but you are advised not to put them in the freezer, only the fridge, to avoid the risk of damaging hte gums with freezer burn. Available from Mothercare. Woops!!! meant fridge, not freezer LOL!! Images of babies getting stuck to teething rings!! :D

I would visit the ped, its not really normal to be in that much pain from teething, it might actually be a throat infection, ear infection some other type of virus. Teething can start months before the teeth erupt so don't be surprised if you don't see anything any time soon.

EMC2012 i completely forgot about the teething necklace after searching on google late night :) its found in favourite things play area in marina mall. so tomorow a trip to marina mall! i am not too keen on using any gel which numbs the gum. ashton and parsons is not available here. also i read that if i add certain amount of walnut oil to my diet it passes to bub through breastmilk. apparently this helps with teething to certain extent not much. the front and bottom teeth comes first so far from what i have read. but my ds's incisors and canines are swelling, now the molars has also started although no teeth has come so far. but the front ones are completely silent. so this is only gum formation? edited by angel joy on 09/08/2012

I used baby Bonjela - but have been trying to find it recently and can only get the adult version :( I ended up buying the Dentinox gel which seems to work. Some friends of mine swore by the Ashton and Parsons teething powders but I think they brought these from the UK. I found some thin water filled teething rings in Mothercare which were small enough to fit comfortably in LO's mouth. I also got an amber necklace from the play area (can't remember the name) that is on the top floor of Dubai Marina Mall - not sure if this made a difference but hey we try anything right?! Calpol definitely helped though. Hope those teeth come through soon :0)

Be careful when picking up Bonjela here, most places sell the adult stuff. I used to rub liquid paracetamol straight onto my DDs gums, this seemed to help. Teethers didn't help at all. I eventualy found some large plastic keys and this was the only thing that helped. Some people swear by Sophie the Giraffe (I have seen it in Toys R Us).

You could try Bonjela teething gel which you can rub onto his gums and is suitable from age 2 months of age. Also a liquid paracetomol syrup may give some relief. I hope he feels some relief soon.
