I am expecting in June and it will be the first time delivering in Dubai. My family has a history of hearing problems so just wanted to check if a hearing test is performed on a newborn as standard. This is done routinely in the UK within the first few days of birth. Many thanks.

Yes, apparently it's a vanity thing to expect to be able to hear properly. Maybe they think ears are painted on! Ours doesn't cover vaccinations either :(. And DD had a consultation and procedure for a tongue tie when she was ten days old, which cost us 700dhs. We were told to pay and claim, so we paid and they denied the claim as it was 'congenital which manifested itself within a month of birth'. Thanks!

Hearing is "cosmetic"? That part of the insurance policy must have been written by a man with selective hearing :-) Honestly, insurance companies here are something else. I looked into our cover for newborn and our insurance doesn't cover vaccinations or "routine check ups" - the two things you need most for newborns. We also had maternity coverage and then two months after I got pregnant our policy changed and they removed the maternity cover - ARGH. Going to my "zone of acceptance" now.

We were offered a hearing test with both of ours but it wasn't covered by insurance as it was considered 'cosmetic'.

Yes, all mine had it done while in hospital or shortly after.
