Hi, My husband is getting home from work at about 7-7.30 every night since we moved to Dubai. Dinner time is getting later for my 3 yo daughter. Can I ask, do you have dinner as a family or do your LOs eat on their own? I previously thought that it would be nice to have dinner as a family but now it doesn't seem fair to her and she needs a routine before school starts in Sept. Do you cook separate children's meals?

TIA for some wonderful ideas:-)

I'm always with DS for breakfast and lunch but never really eat those with him. Dinner we are always together. If DH is late then he warms his up and sometimes has it when DS is having a bedtime snack.

My DD is 3 and I've found that she is happy eating with someone than alone. For the past 6 months DH has been working away from home and only comes back weekends so DD and I eat together. DH came back last week but I still eat with DD now and leave DH's on the side so I never know what time he is coming home. OK, so I should be in the kitchen now instead of on EW with a cuppa:) Thank you for all of your informative replies. I will try giving DD her dinner much earlier (then bath and bed) and have DH dinner's semi-prepared for his eagerly awaited arrival home!

Same here as Dally, or i cook meals in the day when both girls are asleep or at least prepare the vegies for dinner, peel and chop and in water until they need to be steamed ect. We have alot of zuchini slice/casserole/meat and three veg type meals. Pasta also keeps well. I like to have back ups in the freezer so ill do up about three to four different meals one day (that usually lasts about a month) and freeze them so i know i have something healthy for DD if i run out of time.

It's easy if your children eat the same food as you and DH, we were lucky that our children liked "proper" food. I would make the meal at the time the children needed it, I would sometimes eat with them or wait for DH, I'd just plate up our meals and reheat as needed. Or do vice versa cook fresh meal for DH and I and plate up the children's meal, refrigerate and reheat the next day.

Thank you for all the replies. I think that I over complicate things! So when do you cook DH's dinner? After the kids are in bed? My days are really long at the moment and am trying to see how to get organised so I have some quiet time in the evenings! I have to schedule in BF my son at 6.30 pm too:-)

I do the same as Hello.Again.Kitty. We have some spare meals in the freezer made up but depending what we are having that night if its cooked in the day (casserole) or whats leftover from the night before she may have that. I sit with her sometimes having my meal with her, but for the most part she eats by herself and we eat dinner later. I too thought it would be good to eat togther but its not really realistic here when hubby gets home after 7pm most nights. X

DD eats at 6:30 on her own. I sit with her. Sometimes, we all have dinner together if DH can make it, or else she eats on her own.

We have breakfast together and then lunch together with whoever's around (DS and I mainly), but the kids have dinner on their own - still with me there, but not eating - because they need to eat at 17h and DH doesn't come home until about 30 minutes before their bedtime. At weekends we try to eat dinner together, but DH and I find we're ravenous in the evening! As for meals, the children have the same range of meals as we do - sometimes they'll have leftovers if I've done a more lengthy recipe the evening before, but most often I cook them something quickly - pasta/rice/couscous plus some kind of veg and/or sauce and some meat or fish. I also have a series of really, really quick meals in case I need to feed them in less than 10 minutes!

Our 4 yr old usually eats before us, sometimes, depending on what time DH "predicts" he'll be home, both DS and I eat together and DH sorts himself out.
