My husband and I booked flights from Melbourne to Bali (6-7 hour flight) with our twins who will be 5 months old by then before realising that the airline we are flying does not have any baby bassinets on board.

This will be our first flight with the babies. Just wondering if anyone has any tips re flying with 5 month old babies ie what to pack, how to cope with fact we will not have bassinets to place the babies into etc etc?

Any baby flying tips much appreciated!

Mrs B I flew with my DS on an 8 hour UK to USA flight when he was 7 months old without a bassinet seat on Delta. I have to admit that the cabin crew were so far removed from helpful that it was pathetic, so please do not think you can rely on them for assistance as this is not always the case. I would definitely recommend a sling or baby carrier as it means it's less tiring on your arms and it does mean you can relax as and when the babies are asleep. I would also recommend a good hearty meal beforehand and take some snacks so you don't have to eat properly on the plane. It is possible to pull your tray down with a baby on your lap but only really when they're fast asleep. When they're awake and their arms are flailing around it can be very tricky. I also agree that it is a dream flying with them at that age and they are likely to sleep with the engine noise etc. When they start to walk it's a whole different ball game. I'm flying out to the UK in 2 weeks time with a 3.5 yr old, an almost 2 yr old and a 3 mth old and refuse to even think about it at the moment as the dramas that we could possibly encounter are a bit daunting. Am starting to wonder if I can ask for a cage in the hold for the older two whilst I just take the smallest on board with me! :)

I would suggest that each of you have a baby sleep on your lap. Eat and drink before your flight so that you wont need anything when you are onboard. Request bulkhead seats as they have more legroom and you would be able to pad the front with blankets for your babies to lie down on when its not bumpy. Not much else you can do really. That age is the best to travel with kids. So easy.

I'd recommend slings or some sort of baby carriers so you don't need them in arms and can hopefully both rest while the babies sleep. At that age, they should be a dream to travel with. We moved here when my DD was 4 months and she slept, nursed or smiled at me pretty much the entire trip.

Depending on which air hostess you get, you MAY get away with putting them on the floor on a blanket under your legs. It's not allowed but some are less concerned than others. Otherwise, I'm sorry but it's a grin and bear it situation unless flight is not full and you can get spare seats.
