Hi there

I am due to give birth on 19th October with my first baby here in Dubai. As I will be on maternity leave in December, i wanted to make the most of my time off and take the baby back to the UK to meet everyone at Christmas.

My questions are these:

1. Has anyone ever arranged a British passport for a newborn within 2 months?
2. Has anyone ever done a 7 hour flight with a 2 month old? And if so how was it?

Answers would be most appreciated!

Thanks

My paed advised giving the 8 week vaccines early at 6 weeks in preparation for being among all of the plane germs. Baby was fine to have them early as she was in good health and a decent weight. You probably don't want them too close to your flight incase of a reaction/ grottiness while you're travelling. I breastfed in my seat, with strangers sat beside me. Sometimes with and sometimes without a cover, with no problems whatsoever - it's all down to your comfort. But don't feel like you should take baby into the loo for a feed - I wouldn't eat in there!!

I am also due 17 October - all very close together! And planning to fly home in December. Gengerdee your tips are good to know! Do you have to have given your baby vaccines around the 7 or 8 week mark though, just wondering if that needs to be done before you fly? Also, are you allowed breastfeed in your seat on the flight or do you have to do it privately?

My daughter was born 24th October 2 years ago, and I managed to get passport and visa sorted in time to fly home to the UK when she was 7 weeks old so yes it is doable. I'd recommend using baby steps for the birth certificate as soon as you can - they got it turned around really quick and then game me everything I'd need to apply for the passport. Flight wise, I think it was possibly the easiest one I've done with her! Breast feeding helps, and they recommend trying to feed during take off and landing. One thing I'd recommend very highly is to take some Panadol with you and give it around an hour before you're due to land. I didn't and she got really upset due to the pressure in her ears - hadn't realised we'd started the descent until it was too late. I've given it on every flight since and it's never been a problem again. Our second baby is due on the 20th October and I'm hoping to get home for Christmas again, fingers crossed!

Thanks for your reply. Yes I intend to breastfeed so hopefully that should make things easier :-)

7 hours - 2 month old - piece of cake! At the end of summer we will be flying back with the new baby, a 5 year old and 9 year old - 15 hours with stopover.... My recommendation for flying with babies is to persist with breastfeeding. Makes travel so much easier as there is nothing to lug around!
