Ladies, I am trying again tomorrow with a different OB-GYN. Let's hope that the baby keeps very still so we can see between its legs! any luck Anon? No, thanks for asking. The baby's leg was blocking that area. I am just going to wait for my twenty-week scan, which is in two weeks. I think I became so impatient because I found out so early with my last two children that I was expecting to know by now. I am just going to shut my mouth and wait patiently... :-)

Hi BellaUK, Yeah you can go for any scan, the specific 12 week one is the downs syndrome screening scan, they check the Neural Translucency, nasal bone, measurements of the baby, stomach size..you also have a blood test. It's a really thorough scan and you have a short consultation afterwards about your "risk level" for having a downs baby. I found it of great piece of mind as the scan and test also screens for another few genetic disorders that were ruled out with 95% accuracy. The screening costs AED 1550 and is not usually covered by insurance. If you want just a regular scan to check if you are having a boy or girl and just to see everything is developing nicely I believe it costs AED 700 and should be covered by insurance. :-)

Thanks BeanSprout, will make an appointment for the day before I go back and hopefully they will be able to tell me. I don't mind either way, just want to be organised :) Can you just go there for a one off scan? Is it a specific scan you need?

OK I will be the guinea p!g. I have baking soda at home so will do the test and report back tonight. May start another thread where people can say what their results were and how accurate it was. I should have the real answer from the scan in about 5 weeks. FWIW I am convinced it is a boy this time. I am eating round the clock (today - 4am crackers, 7am reheated mashed potato, 9am pain au chocolat, 11am more crackers, 12pm thai lunch). Also strong MS and a pointy bump. Let's see. I have 4 kids and each pregnancy was completely different, completely (I have 3 boys and a girl). I have a friend with 5 boys and again such completely different pregnancies (cravings, size and shape of bump, appetite etc). I guessed right with all of mine but only because of the "gut" feeling. That is the strongest tool you have if you want to predict before your scan. The rest is all nonsense (although I am interested to hear about the baking soda test!! haha)

BellaUK, I found out at 12 weeks at the Fetal Medicine Centre in Heathcare City :-) 23 weeks now and shes been triple confirmed as a girl in subsequent scans. I asked the doc how he could tell so early and he explained they can tell by the angle of the "axis" or pelvis, girls are under 30 degrees and boys stick straight up ;-) Let us know when you find out :-)

What is the earliest that the gender can be determined? I am going back to the UK in October and will just be 12 weeks, would that be too early for a super detailed scan to be able to tell me (I.e. will those parts be formed by then to even be visible)? I would like to do as much as possible of my shopping in the UK so would be really helpful to know early on. P.S. I did the baking powder/bicarb soda test and it didn't fizz, which supposedly means a girl. I have a feeling it's a girl (the same way I had a 'feeling' I was pregnant even before I missed my period, but my hubby is convinced it's a boy. Let's see!

Hubby is convinced we're having a boy, even though they've said girl at all the scans. Actually too afraid to buy girly things in case he's right!

If I had baking soda handy, I'd try this. But I am not going to go to the supermarket and buy baking soda because even if this test would end up being accurate, I would not believe it...

It doesn't hold up scientifically because there are too many variables. Bicarb is an akaline so it will react and fizz when mixed with an acid. Whilst hormonal changes can cause changes in the pH level of urine, so can many other things, diet, medications etc. I'd still give it whirl if I was pregnant though :D

Are you joking or is this really true? Really really true. Can't guarantee it's accuracy but read below: The test itself is easy enough. Put a tablespoon or two of baking soda in a glass. Then add some of your urine to the baking soda. If the combination fizzes, like a soft drink that has been shaken up, then you are having a boy. On the other hand if there is no reaction at all from the baking soda and urine, you're having a girl. The science behind this idea suggests that the gender of the baby changes some of the hormones in the mother's body, which may then change some of the acid content of her urine. If you've ever seen vinegar and baking soda together then you know why acidity is an important concept where this test is concerned.

Congrats Anon! I second the FMC - Dr George is really lovely. But it's about 1,200aed I think for the "anomaly" scan which gives you 4D and he will check the s*x. I am going to try the bicarb trick!! I want to know too but am only 7 weeks haha! Good! Let us know whether it fizzles or not. Apparently, your body knows by 7 weeks and your pee should tell ...

Hello everyone! Thanks for all your responses. I have given up on Medcare because of the long wait time and just booked an appointment for Thursday at the Garhoud Private Hospital. I'll have to see an OB-GYN first, but hopefully they can get me booked in quickly to see a radiologist. And if I'm lucky, my OB-GYN may be able to see the gender herself on Thursday! I guess I don't have the virtue of patience...

I don't know any other Western woman with 4 children besides you, and I don't actually even know you! edited by AnonDubai on 16/09/2013 Lol, arriving back in Dubai this summer we got ushered to an empty line at Immigration, the man saying as he did so 'You've got a big family for English people'! Hope you are feeling ok, you have newborn snuggles on the horizon, lucky lucky you. :-)

My scan is at the beginning of October. I want to know because I want to start buying furniture for my son's bedroom. I need to know if I should plan for another bed in there or not! But all this talk about it has just made me decide that I need to be patient and wait for my scan...It is only a few more weeks...

I did it at Al Wasl a few years ago. It wasn't easy you are right but it was possible and by far the cheapest option. How long until your anatomy scan? I understand the want/need/desire to know.

Agree with aadams. They don't like the phrase "gender scan". are you going to Latifa? if yes, I think they can do the gender scan from 19 weeks....why don't you ring and put pressure on for an earlier appointment. Ring them twice a day for cancellations.... they will get sick of your voice and squeeze you in I am going to Dubai Hospital next month for the scan. I would be surprised if it were that easy to change scan dates!!

Yes, but I read online that it is not accurate and that you are not any closer to knowing after using it. Past users say that the money is better spent on a scan since that test is not cheap. Well you can definitely go to the Fetal Medical Center if you aren't concerned about cost: www.dhcc.ae/clinic/29/Fetal-Medicine-&-Genetic-Center/‎ You should be getting a scan soon anyways. or you could also try the baking soda test: Put enough baking soda into a cup to cover the bottom, then pee into the cup. If the baking soda fizzes, you’re having a boy, if it doesn’t react, a girl. In fact, you should do that and report back if it's accurate or not ... Someone told me about this place so I called them but the secretary had no idea what I was talking about and eventually hung up on me so I didn't get anywhere with them. Call back, tell them you want 18 week scan. They don't ask for a drs referral and don't tell them its just because you want a sneak peek.
