hi ladies,
dd is almost 3 months now and i'd like to get her into a better routine, especially at bedtime, sometimes she sleeps at 8pm for the night and sometimes at 10:30pm!

does anyone have a PDF or second hand book of Gina Ford or Baby Whisperer or No Cry Sleep .Solution? id like to see which one works for her, and I don't like the idea of crying it out, so which one would you recommend?

Yeah I second the log! We always used to worry that DS wasn't taking in as much as the box of formula said but thats only a guide. My son also used to have smaller but more frequent feeds but it all evened out in the end. Sometimes I guess their tummys are smaller than we think and they can't handle a lot of formula in one go. As DohaHW said just watch the weight gain, if it's going up or staying steady then she's getting enough so there's no problem. We ended up starting weaning at 4.5 months with our son, just a baby rice for breakfast until he was 6 months. I have never seen him wolf food down so quickly he loved it and it was then he started to take more milk in one session. x

She's doing great for 3 months, I only hope our DD can do that at 3 months (6 weeks to go so crossing fingers!). I think if she's got reflux and won't take any more milk during the day, don't force it. With our DD, we give her an extra ounce of formula in the bottle than she normally drinks, so that if she wants it, she can have it, and I know that she's finished because she stops eating, rather than because the bottle is empty. Plus it helps with her wind if she's not going down to the final dregs in the bottom of the bottle, which makes my life so much easier! Don't worry about what the packet of formula says, it's just an average. Our DD is taking a little less than what it suggests for her age, but there's not much I can do about it, I'm not going for force it down her throat. As long as her weight gain is good, then you have nothing to worry about. Her stomach will stretch in time to accommodate more food and then she'll sleep longer, but it just takes time. Like I say, she's doing really well, I know one year olds who don't sleep that well! Hope you're finding the books useful. I definitely find keeping a log helpful to see patterns etc.

thanks all! i've read Gina Ford and now I'm reading No Cry Sleep Solution, just mixing and matching to see what works so far, still have Baby Whisperer to go! I've been keeping a schedule, she sleeps for the night by 8:30pm max, and wakes up 6 or 7 hours later for her night feed, (around 4am) even if I give her a dream feed at 11pm. I thought she was doing it out of habit but if I give her water or pacifier at 4am she howls until I give her milk so it seems she is genuinely hungry! Then she wakes up 2 or 3 hours later (around 7:30am) has another feed and is up for the day. I don't mind since I know that at about 3 months the fact that she can sleep this much is still pretty good, but I'd like to eliminate the night feed, but not complaining at all :) I'm thinking maybe it's because she's not feeding enough in the day (she's having 120ml every 4 hours, comes to about 5 feeds a day) but she refuses to take more in the day, and she has reflux so I dont want to stuff her else she'll throw up. She takes Aptamil AR and according to the box she should be taking 180ml in 5 feeds. Going to ask her pediatrician about this in her check up next week but if you moms have any input I'd really appreciate it! edited by sourskittleashnut on 13/10/2012

I used Gina Ford only because that was the routine DS was almost in anyway from his own accord. I always tried just putting DS down and letting him self-soothe but it never worked and I would have to go up to him a few times before he settled. He started teething quite early too and this didn't help so I just thought nevermind and would cuddle him to sleep and put him down. After a lot of his teeth came through there was a little break in him being whingey at bedtime and I decided to start the self-soothing again, he cry-whinged the first night for 20 minutes. It wasn't his upset gulping cry it was just whinging for me so I ignored it and left him and he settled himself and we haven't looked back since! If he had been upset I would have gone to him as I too don't think I could do the CIO method. He is 2 years old now and a brilliant sleeper, the only nights he ever wakes up are when he has a cold, otherwise he sleeps 7 - 6.30am with a 2 hours+ nap in the day. One thing I would say is do what YOU feel is best for your baby, just follow your gut instinct and you'll find something that works for you x

its kinokuniya at dubai mall, fashion parking, dubai mall medical centre level, near virgin store. @ M: i also want to try hybrid method. i don't like CIO but at the same time i have a high demand baby who does not comes under control just by AP. how did you follow? We waited until she was about five months old and used a gradual approach of holding until she was sleepy and then putting her in the cot basically standing over her and doing a cuddle in cot until she fell asleep. Each night was less and less contact, then leaving her in the cot whilst sitting next to her, still visible and patting. Over time I would move away until she couldn't see me. She would often cry and I would let her cry for no more than two minutes before I let her know I was there and patted her a bit. We used a dummy which really helped and it was her cue that it was sleepy time. It would often take her 20 minutes to fall asleep and then I had to leave the room without making a sound which was often difficult! She also has a comforter which I think helped. The whole process took about three months but I think it was worth it. By about 9 or 10 months, we would simply put her in the cot and leave the room. She would be wide awake and standing up but was able to put herself to sleep. In our experience it was a gradual process - no magical cure I'm afraid but we have a happy baby who now tries to climb into the cot herself when it is sleepy time and falls asleep almost immediately. The one thing I cannot get her to do is fall asleep in public so if you have any tips I would be glad to hear them!

thank you all for the advice! she is sleeping for 6-7 hours straight at night which has been amazing, but it's more from her own pattern (and swaddling) and I didnt really do much to make it happen! so i'm trying to keep her good routine going, and refine it more :) I dont believe in too strict an approach and schedule since she's not a robot and will have minor changes here and there. going to buy the books recommended here tomm will let you know how it goes!

The BW book are good, asfar as tired signs etc so long as you completely ignore the breastfeeding mis-info. Her shish-pat and PUPD sleep training techniques are probably the softest crying based approaches for those who are not happy with the no-cry techniques. "Healthy sleep habits happy child" is really good for working out nap times rather than just the "one size fits all" approach that most books take. NCSS for general AP consistent techniques and gentle ways to break habits basically read a few books, take the good and ignore the bad.

I have a 5 week old DD and I'm using the Baby Whisperer, and I love it. It's a sensible approach about listening to your baby, and her tips etc have helped a lot. It just seems logical to me, which is why I like it so much. I don't have a spare copy (and I'm very much still using mine) but they have it in the big book store in the Dubai Mall - starts with a K, but I have no idea how to spell the name of the shop!

I used baby whisperer and it was great, afraid I don't have a copy though as I borrowed it off a friend myself. Though I did also use Gina Ford for reference on rough schedule times and hours of sleep during the day etc, but did not use her techniques.

3 months is pretty young and if LO is already sleeping from 10 or 11 right through the night, i'd say you've got a good deal!:)

Try the sensational baby sleep plan by Alison Scott wright - like Gina ford but a bit more flexible and realistic in my view. Gina ford was great in terms of establishing a routine but I too was not interested in cry it out. In the end I improvised and came up with a hybrid approach of controlled crying but with lots of reassurance. Also try the babysleepsite.com which offers a wealth of free advice.
