DD2 is 10 days old and fed expressed breastmilk from a bottle. She has around 900mL per day which as per the kellymom.com website is on the upper end of what breastfed babies take for the first 6 months. Whilst in the past, it's taken DD over an hour to finish even 50mL of EBM, she can now down 125 mL in as little as twenty minutes. She does have some reflux, but it doesn't appear to have worsened with the larger quantities. She still wakes up hungry three hours after the feed. Do I up the quantity or leave it as is?

DD was having about 800 - 1000 at about 4 weeks so yeh pretty early on. I have now managed to express 5 to 6 times a day max which is SO much better. I would do this is just approx: 330am / 830am / 1130am / 230pm / 530pm / 930pm or just before bed. I sometimes also cut out the 830am or the 1130am and would make up the difference at the next express. honestly getting it like that was great. i also had the same concern that DD was getting too much so i would play with between 100 - 150mls during the day or alternate give her a little less one and then a little more the next. You will work it out. :) edited by Leshell on 07/02/2011

I know what you mean LD. This whole actual vs. adjusted age is just tiring to think about. DD is going to a year old in two weeks, but not really (she will be 9.75 months!). My feeding schedule with her goes like this 1. Bf between 6 and 6.30 2. One more bf at 7.30 before I take off for work 3. Breakfast at 10.00 am followed by 60 mL foruma top up if she wants it 4. Lunch at 1.00 pm followed by formula top up 5. Bf between 4 and 4.30 followed by top up (if its at 4 then I offer a top up) 6. Dinner at 7.00 pm 7. Formula bottle at 8.30 and bed She does not sleep through the night, but does not get fed! So loosely doing the three hour thing. My supply had dropped quite a bit was not meeting DD's needs so I started to supplement and I have to say she is a lot happier and less cranky. I stopped pumping in December and could not be happier. In fact when she turns one, I will be dropping the 4 pm bf and replacing with formula and keeping only the morning feed as she seems to be too distracted to bf properly lately. I bought a deep freezer from Lulu that was a life saver. You can buy it off me if you like. Let me know. DD did not bf till she was home for 2 months (if I remember correctly, it was May and she came home early April).

Hey LD. Good news on the quick eating! I remember being super excited when DD took 20 mins to finish her bottle as opposed to the usual 40 min to 1 hr. The quanity I offered DD rapidly increased from 60 mL (when we brough her home) to 100 mL then 120 mL of EBM. She stayed at 120 mL per feed for the LONGEST time and now just about has 150mL of formula at her last feed at night. I also recommend pumping only once at night because I had a HUGE supply issue (too much milk) and ended up throwing a whole bunch out as apparently it does not last more than 6 months in the deep freeze. I also had too much lipase in my milk which made giving her defrosted milk a little tough (more on me than on her... she did not mind the disgusting taste). Thanks KC. It's really confusing sometimes because in some ways DD is a 2 week old baby and in others she's a 2.5 month old baby. Her feeding pattern is definitely that of a 2.5 month old. I'm assuming that you're also following a three hourly schedule? I hear you about the over supply... I'm actually considering buying a deep freezer just for the EBM!! Now that your DD is one year old, how long do you plan to keep pumping?

Thanks for the feedback Gogi and Leshell. DD is doing much better with her feeds thankfully. They can still sometimes take an hour but most times now she's done in 40 minutes and sometimes as much as 20 minutes depending on how much she wants to have. So there has been some respite there. Unfortunately, she still does not want to breastfeed directly from me, but I am slowly learning to accept that and move on. Leshell, when did your LO start having 800 to 1,000 ml of milk per day? As early as two weeks? I am now worried that I might be giving her too much. She seemed really uncomfortable yesterday with 125mL per feed, so I've dropped it to 100mL today. Like you, I do not want her to starve, but I just compared DD2's weight gain trends to that of her older sister and DD2 weighs at least 700 grams more than her older sister at the same adjusted age. Also how is your pumping schedule coming along? I'm still pumping every three hours during the day and every 4 to five hours at night, but I think I need to cut out a session as I'm making too much milk and I have no place left in the freezer!

DD who is now 8weeks can go from 800 - 1000mls in one day of EBM so i would up it if she needs more. I think if there healthy and eating well then go with it. :)

Hey lemondrops, i remember your worried msg some time ago when DD fed very slow! Great to hear that she has overcome that!! I guess if she was actually nursing off you you would never even know the quantity right? You would just feed on demand and not really ever know how much she is consuming. My guess is that you should give her as much as she wants...babies know when to stop. If you are too worried then ask the pediatrician at your next appointment.
