We started potty training with DD 2 and a half weeks ago by putting her on the toilet every 45 minutes. After an initial hurdle of her not wanting to go sit on the loo (probably because i was taking her so often!) she has stayed dry without accidents for a long stretch now (lost track :s). She's just getting over vaginitis and the doctor said put her back in pull ups till she's better... but she's not peeing in her pull ups. When i see she's not pee'd in a while i take her to the toilet (when she lets me - mostly after a 3 hour+ gap) and she does it. Is this normal? i always offer her water - she doesnt want it all the time. Also she's not asking to go. Yesterday it had really been a long time since she went and was refusing to go to the bathroom so i offered her the travel potty. She said no but then 10 minutes later went and go it and told me to open it, and she went there. But that was a one off.

Am i being a worry wart? If she's not asking how often should i take her?

Farasha it's taken about 6 weeks in total to get my little one (2 yrs 3 mths) to know exactly when he needs to go and for me to be fully relaxed in that I don't have to ask him every half an hour, and he's now reached the point where he'll undress himself, climb on the toilet himself, wipe himself and flush afterwards! Mr independent won't accept any help from me now. He can regularly be dry for 3-4 hours and is also dry at night, unlike my 5 yr old who was also a good 6 months older before being ready to be trained! My little one seems to have a lot more control about these matters, and can hold it in if we're not immediately near a toilet. As with everything, they are all different, but if you perservere as you have been doing, I'm sure that in another 2-3 weeks your DD will just happily go without any prompting. edited by Scribs on 16/02/2011

My DD is 2 years 1 month, she asks to go to the toilet about 6 times a day from when she wakes up to bath time. Sometimes more often if she's had a bit more to drink. Some days she can go 3 hours without needing to do anything others she goes 3 times in half an hour.

DD could go for about 5 hours without needing to go. She was only just 2 when she decided to use the toilet. This i assume was 'normal' i was amazed at how long she could go. But i think that if you ask her every hour in the initial stages you would be safe as to not miss any accidents.

I think you should stretch the 45 minutes to maybe 1.5 to 2 hour gap, but then it really depends on how much they drink and eat (ie melons, grapes). I was taking my DD every 2 hours for a couple of days and then I stopped. She started going on her own but mine was older, 2 years 8 months. Good luck.
