For me it's important to know what date I ovulated, I normally know anyway due to pains but also had used an ovulation kit. I am hoping for a VBAC and so need to ensure the date of conception is as accurate as possible. However due to sperm being able to live up to 6 days and ov happening 36 hours after a peak on the OV kit, this can make a difference to the date. I am only sure because we only did the deed once and because of my luteal phase being 14 days after that as normal. I have been trying for 2 years and know my cycles inside out despite them being so irregular!! So to many people a few days here or there won't matter but to me it's the difference of whether I have a vbac or another c-section

I always thought the first scan was pretty accurate, I had mine done at 7 weeks 4 days and the scan dated me at 8 weeks 1 day

Thanks for your response. I definitely used the right calculator. It was just a scan done in the doctor's office. Are those less accurate?

yeah it is a bit weird, I would guess that either you didn't use the right calculator (did you use one for date of conception/ovulation or did you maybe put your conception date into one where the LMP date should have gone?) or the scan wasn't done accurately. Sometimes the position of the baby makes it hard to get good measurements. I would get another scan done maybe (was it a "proper" scan like a 12 week scan or was it just in the drs office) and double check your own calculations. When they measure via scan they average out femur length, head circumference and I think torso circumference, sometimes they get a weird measurement for just one of these and it skews the whole lot (and its normal for scans to be 4 or 5 days out), I wouldn't stress about it suggesting your baby wasn't growing well though, I think its almost certainly just a measuring error.

Hi Kiwispiers. Could I just ask you a question? I am currently pregnant and know which day I conceived. I am still in the first trimester and I had a scan and it showed my due date to be 10 days behind what the Internet's due date is telling me. I am worried that there is such a discrepancy in the first trimester. Is this normal?

If you actually know the day you ovulated, or the day you conceived for sure then it is more accurate to use an equation that works out your due date from there. If you don't know (like most people) then they use the first day of your last period and assume you have a 28 day cycle with ovulation mid cycle. This is a rough estimate and your due date should really be treated this way. They also estimate based on measurements early in your pregnancy (as all babies tend to measure the same in the early stages) but they can't accurately estimate from measurements later in your pregnancy as some babies are naturally bigger or smaller than others. In my last pregnancy my cycles had been quite irregular as I was still breastfeeding but I knew for sure when my baby had been conceived and made sure that the Dr used that date, which was a week later than using the LMP. My daughter arrived the day after her due date, if they had used the LMP I probably wouldn't have been allowed to have her by vbac so if you do know your dates then make sure its in your file. crashingwaves if you had a textbook ovulation pattern and 'did the deed' on day 8 there could easily still be sperm around by the time you ovulated.

I can say that it is all wrong, I was on a perfect 28 day cycle and conceived on day 8. Well obviously I did not conceive on that day, that was the day of copulation, and I suppose sperm has a durable shelf life and perhaps I ovulated early that month. Or, I became a rabbit, whereby intercourse can stimulate ovulation. Also used birth control. Some things are meant to be ;)

as Anon said, but this is only correct if you have a normal 28-30 days cycle. If you have longer cycles they should do it from the date you ovulated as they have to do for me as my cycles are from 36 days to 100 days long!! That's the problem. "Due dates" are a myth. We fixate on them, but they are really an estimate. Most women don't know when they ovulate, so calculating from ovulation isn't a good metric, either. A more accurate way to look at it would be to figure 38-42 weeks from the first day of your last menstrual cycle or 36-40 weeks from when you ovulate (if you know with some degree of certainty.) Typically the vast majority of women go into labor on their own within that range. Overdue really is only beyond 42 weeks yet people treat 40 weeks and their due date as it's some sort of expiration date.
