I am 6 weeks pregnant. This is my 3rd child. I was surprised when my doctor said a 'No' to seafood which also includes any type of fish. She said there is a high content of mercury in them which could affect the baby's brain development. Is it true?

Fishes with high content of mercury should be avoided. Google them out. But fishes like sardines are very good for the baby as far as I know. I had a ton of it during my pregnancy and even other fishes at times. Some people say prawns should be avoided but I used to love it for those nine months.

Some fish can contain high levels of mercury, and too much mercury can harm a developing fetus. It's particularly big fish which are top predators and eat other fish, like sharks - these types of fish are also long-lived so they accumulate more mercury. But there are other types of fish which have lower levels and are safer to eat in reduced quantities. Have a look here: http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pages/Mercury_in_fish . You don't need to stop eating it altogether.
