Tv/ipad my son hardly ever watched it before my daughter was born. I feel a bit guilty but nothing else really worked. When we are out and about its about finding a place where he can't run away. I quite often feed in the trampoline area at softplays.

Don't worry Baslaef, you'll be fine. Watching the sibling bond grow is a beautiful experience, enjoy :)

Congratulations Baslaef! It can feel tricky at first but it won't be long before you're an expert at juggling 2 children. I decided against the TV / iPad when breastfeeding. Simply because my second (and third, and fourth) babies breastfeed all the time when they were tiny and I didn't want the TV on non-stop or my toddler whining for it if I only had it on some of the time. We read a LOT of books when feeding. Nice for the older child and nice for the baby to hear my voice. I'd put music on for my toddler to dance and me to chair dance. I also would put out different boxes of toys throughout the day for the toddler to rummage in. Simple puzzles were good. We'd also play lots of games where I'd ask my toddler to go and find certain things and bring them to me. Or I'd tip out lots of coloured balls or soft toys for collecting. You'll probably also find that there is not much you can't do when breast feeding your second baby. Walking around and making meals can both be done no problems one handed. The days of sitting down reading or watching TV whilst breastfeeding your first will seem like a distant memory! With regards to putting your newborn to sleep, I've always found that my children have gotten off to sleep better with a bit of noise around when they are tiny so you don't need a silent house. Of course you'll have moments when your older child will shriek at just the wrong time and wake the baby but it's just one of those unavoidable things. As some of the other posters have said, it's also a good time to encourage your older child to play independently. It's also a great learning curve for them that they need to begin to think of others. Good luck!

Congratulations on your new baby! I agree with the posters below regarding, tv, singing songs, ipad or phone, reading books. Your toddler will soon realise what you're doing and that you can't physically do things with him at the same time and won't hold it against you. I have help now with my third LO but this is exactly what I did with my first two who are about the same distant apart. My favourite part of the day was afternoon naps when all three of us would go to bed together. I would feed DS2 whilst lying down and DS1 would lie the other side of him and fall asleep holding DS1 hand or with his hand on his leg - it was so sweet to watch!

I turned the TV on more than I'd care to admit when my second was born. It was the only way I could keep my oldest contained and occupied while nursing.

I was in your exact same situation a few years ago with a newborn and an 18 month-old. I used to turn on the television every time I breastfed my second. My first loved Barney at the time and that would always catch her attention. You could also consider an Ipad or Iphone. We didn't have those when my two were that age...

Congratulations on your new baby. You'll manage fine as generations of mums have done before you :) I used to simply chat or sing songs with my older DD as I fed/changed her baby brother and encouraged her to "help". As Quinn 10 said, this is a good time to teach your older child to amuse him/herself without him/her feeling pushed out. My DD used to sit beside me and feed her dolly while I fed her brother!

Playpen? Lindem does these really lovely gates, you can gate off a small area with toys, teach the older one to entertain her/himself?

Hi Ladies! My newbie arrived 6 days ago ☺ I'm home alone with him and my 18month old. I have no house keeper/maid or nanny. My hubby works 24/7. Any advice, apart from "get a maid or nanny" as to how to handle the 18 month old whilst breastfeeding the newborn or putting the newborn to sleep?... Thanks in advance..
