no heartbeat at 8wk - is there any hope?

Girls,
Just been for an ultrasound at 8wks and the Doc couldn't see a heartbeat (there wasn't one at the 6wk scan either). I had a tiny bit of bleeding/spotting last weekend and had an internal us where they could see an embryo and a teeny fetal pole. The Doc said she was unwilling to perform an internal today as I had spotting last weekend and told me to return for an internal us next week. When I said that I thought you should always be able to see a heartbeat at 8wks she said that although it wasn't normal to not see one at this stage, not to worry as it sometimes happens with IVF. I think she's giving me false hope but was very matter of fact and I would have liked for her to discuss what may happen but I just felt as if I was being rushed out the door.
Has anyone been in a similar situation? Of course, I'm going to try to stay positive and hope for the best but I just have this sinking feeling that it's not going to be a happy outcome. It doesn't help that we were planning to fly home for a break on Friday and was so looking forward to seeing my parents and now I have to cancel everything.
I'd love to hear positive stories but equally, if anyone has been through this and it's not a happy ending I'd like to know too.
Thanks x

Thanks Graygirl, It's a relief to have gotten this far, keeping my fingers crossed for the next few weeks. Funny how the worrying never ends, no matter how many milestones you hit. I hope your ultrasound goes well this week and there's a strong heartbeat. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that this is it for you. Xx

Girls, Thanks so much for your touching messages. DohaHW, thank you for sharing your experience - it helps a lot! Here's hoping mine is a late starter too - when I had the scan at 6w5d they said the size was 5w but the doc said that wasn't anything to worry about. At the end of the day, there's nothing I can do but think positive and take it easy (which isn't hard during Ramadan)! My very best wishes to you for the big event DohaHW - not long to go now before you meet your little one, xx

I don't know if this helps, but at my 5 week scan there was absolutely nothing at all, and at 7 weeks there was a sac but no heartbeat etc. I went back two weeks later and the heartbeat was there. I was measuring behind at that stage, so my LO was just a late starter. I'm now nearly 36 weeks and no problems. I had external ultrasounds, not internal. I'm keeping my fingers tightly crossed. Lots and lots of baby dust. xxx

ignore my last question, I see it was external. Fingers crossed for you. If the baby had grown since the last scan then thats a good sign.

was it an external or vaginal ultrasound, if external then often they can't see a heartbeat quite this early.
