Pregnant in Dubai but giving birth in London?/Pregnancy questions

Hi ladies,

I am due in November with my first baby but planning to go back to London to give birth there as my family and friends are all in UK and I think I'll need their support in the first few weeks. Has anyone done this or have any advice re how to go about it please? (I am a UK citizen.)

I am currently going to the American Hospital for the prenatal care and everything is fine so far but I have no idea what to do when I go back to London to give birth, i.e., I have no hospital/maternity care lined up and I won't be back there until I am around 32 weeks (or the latest I can safely fly). Do I just show up at a hospital and hope they will take me on?

Separately, I would love to meet up with other mums-to-be in Dubai but I think all the coffee mornings are during the working week when I am at work. Are there other groups on at weekends?

Finally, what are people doing to try and keep the weight off during pregnancy? I thought giving up booze would mean I would be looking like Kate Moss in no time but I cannot stop eating - the sweeter the food, the better and even just going for a walk seems like a tall order in this heat.

Any and all recommendations welcome please!

Hi all, I don t know about the uk as I m swiss. I m also pregnant n due in November. I moved for the same reasons u mentioned plus the medical care back home is much better than in the uae. I flew to Geneva 2months ago n went to register myself as a resident. I told them I back n done all paper regarding my medical insurance n started visiting a new doc without any issues. I m eligible for all medical care free just paying my monthly primes, there is no waiting period or whatsoever they request in dubai.n when I want to go back I still have my residency in dubai. The UK works differently than Switzerland[/quote That's why I stated" I don't know about the uk " if you have read my post carefully.

Thanks so much all for the advice. It does sound like I'd need to pay for delivery if any questions were asked. I have a UK address and a NI number but as Geordie expat says below, I don't see how I can provide information from my doctor without revealing that I have been living in Dubai, i.e., my medical notes would all be from a Dubai doctor. Does anyone know if it's possible to get medical insurance essentially to cover the period from now until after delivery? My work insurance only covers the Middle East. Thanks a lot, NF

What about British Nationals? I have paid taxes in the past. Nationality or past or present payments of UK taxes and National Insurance contributions are not taken into consideration when establishing residence. The only thing relevant is whether you ordinarily live in the UK. http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/+/www.dh.gov.uk/en/Healthcare/Entitlementsandcharges/OverseasVisitors/Browsable/DH_074374

Doesn't matter if you're paying NI or not, you're classed as non-resident my colleagues Wife still pays NI and when she gave birth in the UK 2 years ago ( Has lived here for 10) she disclosed this and they allowed to her to deliver for free They rarely check and if you have a NI number and a UK address then I doubt they can enforce however they may ask for information from your DR which is difficult to provide if you don't live in the UK. Interesting, as even our GP said that although technically he was keeping us on 'his books', as we'd be living out of the country we couldn't use the NHS, unless it was emergency and even then they may charge us. edited by Geordie expat on 10/06/2014

Sorry to hijack OP @Starsouthern I've always thought if your still paying NI contributions in UK and reside in Dubai your still entitle to use the NHS for free? Correct me if I'm wrong. edited by Fr!zzyBusY on 10/06/2014 I don't know as I'm not from the UK but 3 ladies I know were given a hefty bill maybe they're not paying the NI contributions. There are also other threads on here about the same thing. Just wanted to give OP a heads up incase.

Hi NF I don't know about the procedure in giving birth in the UK but just to let you know that a couple of ladies I know have gone back and the delivery was not free, as they are no longer resident. To keep the weight off eat lots of fruit and vegetables. I'm constantly hungry so carry a box of cut up vegetables and fruit so I'm not tempted to buy something when out and about. I've cut out all white carbs and eat only whole grain and high energy foods, it really does cut the sugar cravings. edited by starsouthern on 10/06/2014
