We're relatively new to Dubai, only moved here last August, & I've just found out I'm pregnant with number 2. How are pregnancies handled in Dubai? Do I need to make an appointment with a GP first of all or a different type of Doctor? In the UK when I was pregnant with my first my docs weren't very interested until I was about 8 weeks or so & then I was booked in with a midwife, but I know they don't have midwives here. Who do you have appointments with throughout your pregnancy? A GP or a OBGYN? & does anyone know how they manage potential risks here? I got preeclampsia with my first pregnancy so want to check that I'd be closely monitored this time. Thanks for your help.

When I found out I was pregnant (PT at home ), I immediately booked an appointment to the nearest OB clinic in our area. Had a scan at 8 weeks to confirm my pregnancy viability and it was all good. I had a couple of visits to different OBs on the early trimester because i want someone whom I can be really at ease with and share my hang ups as this is my first pregnancy. Do also check if your insurance covers maternity. Unfortunately in my case, it doesn't so along with OB hunting/ comes also hospital search which could have a reasonable budget for us and if something goes wrong with the baby. Yes, they do intensive scans and tests here to monitor your pregnancy and to be quite honest, I'm very happy with it. I am having my antenatal check ups at the American Hospital under Dr. Braithwite but then I am seeing now Dr. Kasturi at the Thumbay Hospital in Al Ghusais as they gave us a good delivery package there. I'm about to pop soon and couldn't wait despite the dreaded heat.

Congratulations! I didn't have a clue either as I'm pregnant with my first and the system is different to the UK as you say! I went to my normal GP at around 6 weeks just to confirm pregnancy (although as I walked in he congratulated me so to be honest he didn't need to confirm it, he had just taken my word for it, so I think you can skip this bit!) then had my first scan at 7 weeks at City Hospital - the OBGYN doc said this was the right time for me to have gone for first scan to confirm pregnancy viability etc. They are pretty good here (as it's all private healthcare) and you have appointments (with a scan at each for me so far, i'm 21 weeks) every 4 weeks, until around 32 weeks and then they increase the frequency. I suppose it depends on the doctor, but from what I have seen here and compared to my friends in the UK the appointments and scans are a lot more frequent, so they should monitor quite closely and be able to pick up on any issues Good luck!
