Hi ladies,

At 7 weeks, is it important to be taking a prenatal vitamin? If so, can you recommend any?

TIA

Thank you everyone for your amazing advice. Going to keep taking my folic acid tablets and will see the DR at 10 weeks, so she can advise me on what to take from then on. Thank you again

Yes I find they always go to the extreme here, they may be to cover themselves. A good pregnancy vitamin is ideal like Pregnacare and calcium later on is important as the baby takes yours which could lead to bone deficiency if you don't replace.

Ladies, if any of you have been pregnant back home, do the doctors there normally prescribe ALL these vitamins without first confirming if you need them or not via blood/urine test? My mother said back home they will only ever give you folic acid and if you have deficiency in any vitamin after checking blood/urine they will prescribe for the same. But here i was given everything even though my blood/urine tests showed everything was fine, i had plenty of everything! also my mom said Duphaston is only given to ladies who have a history of miscarriage back home. I was wondering why i was prescribed it in my first pregnancy? I feel they are happy to dish out pills here whether you need them or not :/

I took Pregnacare plus Omega and Osteocare before, throughout and whilst breastfeeding my first child, I'm currently taking Pregnacare (normal), Osteocare and a Pregnancy Omega 3 supplement for pregnancy no.2. As previous posts have said, the important thing in trimester 1 is folic acid and anything else is a bonus. Yes, you should try to get all of your vitamins from food, that's the ideal, but if you have bad nausea and sickness then a supplement helps. I decided that a healthy diet + supplement = a guaranteed way of gtting your RDA of everything either via food or pill. Everyone is different though, but as long as you take Folic Acid for trimester 1 BacktoBlonde then you'll be fine! :)

For the 1st trimester Dr. put me on folic acid (which i had been taking for 6 months before i conceived anyway) and Duphaston (still don't know what they were for honestly and i stopped taking them after a couple of weeks. 2nd trimester Dr. put me on Promise vitamins in morning, ferose chewable iron in afternoon and caltrate (calcium) in the evening. 3rd trimester (new doctor) now i'm on Pregnacare, feroglobin and caltrate. Hi Mrs Abdala The duphaston is extra progesterone which some drs believe prevent miscarriage..my dr put me on it and told me that it is not proven to prevent but even if it doesn't work it doesn't harm so why not take them until 12 weeks (I had a miscarriage before my two kids were born) so I just did as I was told :) From 12 weeks dr took me off the folic acid and duphaston and put me on Elevit in the morning and Calcivit in the evening. Been on these since and Dr happy with everything so far.

You should be taking folic acid, ideally you'd start taking it before you even conceive. You should also get your iron levels tested and if they are low you might want to take iron, aside from that you don't need to take anything, I only took folic acid from before conception to 12 weeks and nothing else for either pregnancy but I monitored my iron and vit d levels throughout and made sure I ate well. If your diet is really poor or you have severe morning sickness and are vommitting everything up then you would possibly benefit from a pregnancy multivitamin but ideally you would get your nutrients from food rather than a pill. edited by kiwispiers on 22/03/2013

I'm taking Pregnacare Plus Omega 3. My OB told me to start taking around 7 weeks when I went for my first check up. And the box says from Conception, All through out Pregnancy and while Breastfeeding. HTH :)
