Hi fellow Aussies,
Hoping for your help as my due date creeps closer.
Has anyone already had the experience of registering the baby's birth back home and getting a passport? How does that all work and how do I go about doing it?
I assume the baby automatically has Australian citizenship even though born overseas by means of descent?
How do I apply for a passport for him/her? Can I do it online? Or do I need to go to the embassy in Abu Dhabi?
Bit confused re how this all works so any help would be very much appreciated!
Thanks so much.

Once you've got the baby's birth certificate, you'll need to apply for citizenship by decent. The forms need to be lodged at the Visa office at Wafi. It's only once you've got the citizenship certificate that you'll be able to apply for a Passport. The documentation is all online. Good luck.

We got British first followed by Australian, as it was easier - we are in Qatar so slightly different process, but you don't need to apply for citizenship by descent prior to passport application with the British one.

I found dealing with the British embassy staff much more enjoyable. The Aussie staff were quite rude and acted as though they were doing me a massive favour. edited by flydiver11 on 31/01/2014 Hi. Wondering whether you got both Australian and British? I'm Australian and my husband is British and we are planning on applying for both. Not sure tho whether there is any particular order that we should do it in or whether that makes any difference at all? Thanks :)

Hi, It was not that difficult to apply myself at the Aussie embassy which is in the commercial tower at the Burjaman shopping center. Although I've heard baby steps make it all very easy. We had some delays as although I recieved my Australian citizenship three decades ago, and have had 4 Australian passports, they wanted my Original Australian Citizenship papers which I didn't have and had to apply for, before applying for my sons citizenship and then his passport. Be prepared for the attitude at the embassy, I found dealing with the British embassy staff much more enjoyable. The Aussie staff were quite rude and acted as though they were doing me a massive favour. edited by flydiver11 on 31/01/2014

Hi! I'm so sorry that I don't have time for a detailed response but you are correct regarding bubs getting citizenship by means of descent. We used the Baby Steps company to help with birth certificates and passport. There website is www.babystepsdubai.com http://www.citizenship.gov.au/applying/how_to_apply/born_overseas/ https://www.passports.gov.au/Web/Newppt/applyingU18.aspx Good Luck!
