Hi

Im now at 31 weeks pregnant and things are moving along quite fast now I am nearing the end. As I am still working I have found it hard to get to any coffee mornings and dont know any mums yet, so some questions I would really appreciate some help with.

1. How do we get insurance for when the baby is born? My insurance states it covers for first 24 hours but what if something god forbid goes wrong?

2. My dh works away most of the time and is not available till I am 36 weeks for Antenatal classes. Are they worth going to, and is there a short version that we can perhaps attend?

3. I get the impression that they are quite C Section happy in Dubai, have you found this to be the case?

4. Last but not least, any pointers as to where to hire breast pump and is this the best thing to do or should I buy one?

Sorry lots of questions if anyone can help with any of the above that would be fantastic.

Oh and I hope you all have a good night tomorrow and people don't get stuck in much traffic. I think we will be watching the fireworks on the tv (ha could be anywhere in the world watching it on tv)

I can't give advice on ALL your questions (never had a baby in Dubai) but can help on some. antenatal classes - I found these to be very valuable. Mine were given by the midwives at the birthing centre where I was booked to have my first baby. I also attended a physiotherapist run class on 'natural delivery' methods that included massage, breathing and other natural techniques for pain relief. I found they were helpful for my DH who has no idea of the whole thing and little interest in doing his own research. I went onto have 2 natural deliveries with no pain relief at all. I think this was helped by the classes that I attended. I am the sort of person who likes knowledge and also likes to be control at all times so the classes for me were just a part of this learning process. Breast Pump - my first DS was born early (36 weeks) and very small (2.0kg). He didn't feed well for a while and so I pumped in addition to breastfeeding him every 3 hours and then gave it to him as a top up until he reached 2.5 kg. I used an electric pump for the first 2 weeks and then used a manual pump from then on. After the initial few weeks I only pumped if i needed to go out. With my second DS - who was on time and a normal size (2.8kg) I didn't pump at all in the beginning. We just established feeding naturally. It was so so much more relaxing. I didn't pump until he was a few weeks old and I wanted to go to an exercise class without him. I only ever used a manual pump with him. I would not bother getting an expensive electric pump unless the need arises, at which stage you should be able to get one quickly. The Medela ones are usually the most recommended.

Hi French Nath Firstly thanks so much, its so helpful to have someone who has got a bit of experience in this themselves. There is lots of information to take in at the moment and I really appreciate your input. Im going to get onto the insurance first thing tomorrow as sounds like a plan - they have been really great so far so hopefully this will be easy. I'm thinking the same re antenatal classes, in an ideal world I would have gone to some but its not going to be much fun with DH working away so think we might just go with the hospital show round and work closely with our Gynae - we see so much of the doctor and hospital as it is compared to UK NHS experiences by the sounds of it we are getting to know each other quite well. I think at my next appointment Im going to bring up details of what I would like and have a birth plan to hand, hopefully this will be used although I do understand that IF there is a problem this may not be able to be followed through. Breastpump is going to be ordered from UK, DH is working there for a week so he can have the fun of bringing it back to the uk - should be fun for him if immigration stop him to explain ha ha. Thanks again and Happy New Year. Hopefully I'll able to help someone else at some point, just like you have me. One good turn done for you today :-)

Hi Loopylulu, Congratulations and good luck for the last leg of your pregnancy. I'll answer your questions in order. 1. For both my children, this is what I did. I contacted my insurance before giving birth and told them I wanted to register my baby with them. I had to wait for the birth to have the legal documents but then the contract covered from birth. I paid the expenses for the baby and claimed after. Ask your insurance, they'll tell you how it works. 2. I didn't go to antenatal classes as I prefered to keep my money for when the baby was born and I had issues that needed to be answered. However, for my first pregnancy, I was off for 3 months before the birth and I had plenty of time to read about labour, delivery, breathing techniques etc. If you want to do antenatal classes and you are restricted in time, there are some midwives who will do like a private antenatal class that will suit your timetable. I'm sure you can find some names on threads here. 3. I have had my 2 children by normal delivery. I had discussed my views with my gyne, had written a birth plan to be on the safe side. I think that as long as you state what you want AND there is no complication, god forbid, no gyne will impose a c-section on you. 4. I bought a breastpump for my first, I used it for well over a year and I am now using it again with DS who is nearly 7 months. It is completely normal to have a lot of questions... Wait for the baby to arrive and you'll see that the questions keep piling up. Anyway, hope what I wrote is helpful. edited by French Nath on 01/01/2014
