all my common sense has gone out the window. Is it safe to cover food when it's warm? I know you have to wait till food has cooled before storing in the freezer but can I put all the lids on while it's still hot/warm?

Not a silly question at all MaxandMe. You should wait for hot food to turn to warm before you put it in the FRIDGE (the lid should not be fully on, but slightly ajar). When the food is cool then you can put it into the FREEZER with the lid on fully. This is the recommended safe way of doing it.
