Hi everyone,

I just wanted to know if this was normal...

Since my son has started nursery, every single week the poor thing is ill.

Runny nose, cough, and high temp....

I feel like he is off nursery sick more that what he actually goes.

He was very rarely ill before starting nursery, and since he has been going it is literally every week he is getting ill.

He recovers then goes back to nursery and gets ill again...

Is this normal~??

Thanks for your advice. I found it strange that every time he goes back to nursery he is ill again.... But most people say, its normal for him to be ill a lot as he is around other children and germs spread etc.... It just seems that we are paying a lot of money to send him nursery, however he seems to be at home more than he is going....

I am afraid that it's a normal situation for all kids starting nursery. When DS started his nursery at the age of 2, he was too getting sick quite often - one week in nursery, 2 weeks at home till full recovery and thanks god I had a great support to actually keep him home till he fully recovered. For the first 4 months he attended nursery for about 2-2.5 months in total combined. There are several reasons that it's happening: a) some parents send their kids when they are still sick, obviously for various reasons (no one to take care of the children while both parents working or feel that if a child doesn't have fever but sniffles it's still ok to go to nursery) b) varience in the temperature (outside & inside) - they go out to play and they sweat, then they go inside and sit under a/c. c) when a child starts at nursery, he/she goes through adaptation process and in the beginning it causes them stress which brings down the immune system and allows in the virus. As shjbelle suggested, feel the temperature within the classroom and ask TA to dress your DS into jacket if it's cold but to take off when they go outside. Also increase his intake of vitamins

Ermm.. no. He shouldn't ill EVERY week. However, do bear in mind that some parents still send their child even if their child is 'sick'. What I do is make sure DD wears layers in nursery as they play outdoors and indoors. I realise that their ac is pretty high in class. I always have a cardi in DD's bag and at home I increase her Vit C. But they do get sick more often than just being at home.
