I wonder if Japanese women refrain from eating sushi whilst pregnant.
Not all of them. you can still eat some types of sushi, such as California rolls and cooked eel, are fine to eat while you're pregnant. But you should avoid eating the kinds that contain raw seafood/s. :)

Between mercury, listeria and general Dubai food prep standards--bacteria, etc., I just wouldn't risk it.
With both my pregnancies, I avoided sushi throughout them but my husband knew to get me some as one of my first meals after delivery. A well-earned reward and a worthwhile sacrifice in my opinion.
I am more worried about the risk of listeria in the rice than the fish...
I agree, my doctor said it was the cold rice that was the biggest risk. Apparently there is something in rice that encourages the fastest growth in listeria out of all foods. The doctor described it as a petrie dish to me so I stuck well away.
I have seen that if you make the sushi at home and eat it as soon as you have prepared it it is ok, but not ok to keep for later.
You should not but if you do then make sure the sushi was made from previously frozen fish. You might be missing some omega-3/6 so try include a couple of times other fish or take flax seed . It might help with the cravings. Vegetarian sushi is another alternative. I know not the same :-)
Interesting topic. I love sushi and I'm pregnant at the moment, but I worried about the levels of mercury in fish - especially tuna. I'm being very careful at the moment and have opted for vegetarian sushi. Sushi Counter do vegetarian sushi, (menu: http://www.sushicounter.com/?p=home/sushi-dubai) give them a try if you're craving sushi but don't want the risk of mercury in your system...
