Thank you ladies for the helpful comments. mks: DD used to take a bottle when I would pump BM so I don't think that's the problem. Kiwispiers: I still havent gotten my period and I feel like even if i did get pregnant while bfing it will be even more stressful to stop. I will try feeding her tomorrow with some banana puree and stage 1 formula and see if that works. Do you suggest that I feed her early in the morning or some other time of the day. Everyone says I should wait until she is really hungry. It's so hard watching your baby cry just because they want to nurse. Makes me feel selfish. I just hope I can do this! mols:Are you still nursing or have you stopped completely? Do you know where I can find this formula? I only saw regular Aptamil stage 1 at the pharmacy and spinneys.

hi sal123 - im currently doing the same (altho at 6mnths not 9mnths - well done!) and i went through same process for the first few days - i recommend Aptamil 1 first milk breastmilk substitute- it was recommended to me by several drs and maternity nurses in europe as the best substitute and i agree with Kiwispers - go for the 0-6mnths...good luck! it takes a few days - and dont forget at the beginning they will eat a lot less as its thicker/heavier...

Cows milk plus vitamins is not the same as formula, formula has been modified to make it more similar to human milk. These modifications include reducing the sodium content, cows milk is too high in sodium for a small baby to process and could harm their kidneys. Cows milk is also higher in protein which again can be hard for little ones to process. Just to be clear, Drs don't "reccomend" a switch to cows milk at 12 months, its just that by 12 months most children are able to better tolerate cows milk and its not forming such a major part of their diet so if you no longer wish to breastfeed or don't want the expense and hassle of formula then it is safe to switch. Follow on formulas are permitted to contain cheaper ingredients than from birth formulas and are less similar to breastmilk, personally I would always go for a formula that was suitable from birth. The gradual watering down approach sounds like the way to go, formula tastes hugely different to breastmilk. You could also just cut back on breastfeeds slowly and give the formula feeds in the form of smoothies, adding fresh fruits etc to mask the taste of the formula. A sippy cup with a straw might work better than a bottle. Breastfeeding also fulfils an emotional need for children, so you might need to give some extra cuddle/quiet time to compensate. If it doesn't go smoothly, you can get pregnant while breastfeeding, I breastfed until I was 4 months pregnant and it made the weaning process really easy because my supply gradually dwindled and as a result my son just lost interest and self weaned. edited by kiwispiers on 24/02/2013

Hi Sal, Just a few thoughts. 1- Are you sure its the formula shes resisting and not the bottle? Does she take bottle for something other than formula? 2- Once its established that she is okay with the bottle (taking water or EBM) you can try a few different formulas Or you could mix EBM three parts to 1 part formula and continue for say 3 days..once shes adjusted to the taste well, try to mix half EBM and half formula and slowly reduce till it is all formula. BF is hard work and you have done it for 9 MONTHS! HATS OFF TO YOU!

My daughter will be 9 months old next week and I would like to start weaning her off my breast. I want to start trying for another baby and don't want to continue Bfing for the next 3 months. She is having solids 3 times a day and I only plan on feeding 16 oz-20oz of formula day. I tried to give her formula when she was 7 months old but she start coughing and screaming and would not drink it so I felt horrible and didn't try again. I know a few moms that gave their babies cows milk at 9-10 months with vitamin drops. I don't feel very comfortable doing this but just wanted to know if anyone else has experience with cows milk before their baby is 12 months old. In the US it is recommended to start cows milk at 12 months. I heard from a friend that babies in europe can continue formula until 2? I also was wondering if anyone would recommend a formula here that tastes similar to breast milk. I was thinking about buying HIPP follow on milk but then I read that it is really sweet and that I should use regular formula instead. Can anyone recommend another brand I can try? I would really appreciate any advice. I am just overwhelmed with the amount of information I have found on the internet and also feel really guilty about my decision. Any help/advice would be appreciated!
