Weaning a preemie - LO is constipated. Any advice?

My DD is 8.5 months (5.5 corrected) and I am weaning her. She's massively keen and will eat well (now small breakfast and lunch) but is very bunged up. She's not too upset by it but refuses water or water with orange juice (or only takes a small bit) and is a bit more sicky than normal. When thirsty she has a BF. Are there any foods that would 'loosen' her up a bit?!

I don't remember it with my first term DD who didn't seem to suffer from being constipated. But this one is. I have recently started to give formula twice daily to her as at 7.5 months she wasn't ready to wean but needed, it seemed, more than my milk and having gone to 7.5 months I was v tired from expressing for 2 months then feeding a small baby for over 5. I'm not so used to using formula but think that might bung her up a bit too - is it ok to water down slightly?

Thanks for any advice!

Thanks all - gosh the prune thing certainly works. She looks most relieved poor love. Great news :) Try using them on a regular basis or slip them into a meal every few days to keep her regular! Hope it wasn't a blow-out ;)

Try Boiled water with a teaspoon of fresh Orange Juice (no pulp!) should get things moving - if you google it you will see that it seems quite successful! :)

Definitely try prunes - they're great for easing constipation. Also try a little bit of apple juice, regular fruits (but not banana's as these can cause constipation) to get things going. Continue to offer water after formula/ bf if you think she's thirsty as this heat can dehydrate and try long deep bath's (get's things relaxed down there).

Hi. We put some softened up prunes in her food and that stuff came right out the other end and resolved some of her issues. Try it.

OK - know you're not meant to and won't (water down) - she does eventually take some water so that's good and I know she's not dehydrated as lots of wet nappies from my milk and her bottles. Have done bicycles and will try the knee squeeze and downward rubbing. Had some grunts/ strains yesterday followed by a small nappy - much drier than anything before - but then she's also not used to having to try as all BF 'til now. Really 3 days since last proper movement - no pain but wanted to try to do something before I get to the suppository point...may need to tho' Thanks.

never water down formula. Try to little bicycle movements with her legs and then squeezing both knees to her tummy. also rubbing her tummy downwards. has she passed anything at all, is she struggling, and how many days has it been since her last movement? I have given my LO suppositories before...... the glycerin ones. Some may not agree with it but mine was struggling for a few days and screaming in pain.
